According to a new study the researchers have discovered that using a hand sanitizer can keep germs at bay, but however this disinfectant carries some dangers and the users must be forewarned.

30 August 2013, USA (http://www.realpharmacyrx.co/): According to a new study the researchers have discovered that using a hand sanitizer can keep germs at bay, but however this disinfectant carries some dangers and the users must be forewarned. Now-a-days hand sanitizers have become an essential addition of the basic hygiene. These products claim to kill 99.9% bacteria and other germs. The study has revealed that the hand sanitizers effective but not foolproof and can be potentially harmful for its users.

They usually contain isopropanol, n-propanol, and ethyl alcohol as its active ingredients. They tend to kill germs more efficiently than the regular soaps available in the market as they contain alcohol as a predominant ingredient. Some of the inactive ingredients in it act as thickening agents. Even though it is a convenient disinfection it can prove detrimental to our safety and health.

Dangers of hand sanitizers: • Those with low alcohol content can increase the bacterial count on our hands instead of reducing it. • The researchers conducted experiments using 40% ethanol alcohol-based sanitizer and asked the volunteers to clean their hands with running tap water, antimicrobial soap, and then with the hand sanitizer. • They noticed handprint of the volunteers on the agar plates that showed an increase in bacterial concentrations as compared to other hand sanitizers. • Therefore, the sanitizers with 40% ethanol were less effective in killing bacteria as compared to the ones that contained 60% ethanol. • Alcohol based sanitizers are highly inflammable and are a potential fire hazard. • Therefore, one must always store the disinfectant in cool and dry place. Those who smoke or deal with fire frequently must wait till the gel has completely dried from their hands so as to reduce the chances of contact burns. • Applying hand sanitizers to wounds, cuts, hangnails, or using it in excess can lead to itching, burning sensation and rashes of the hands.
