9th October 2013, USA (http://www.zeepharmacy.co) : Alpers’ disease is a neurological degenerative disease caused by mutations in mitochondrial DNA. Some scientists believe that this disease is caused by underlying metabolic defects. It affects grey matter of the cerebrum which controls learning, motor and sensory movements. The disease is hereditary in nature and transmitted through Recessive genes. The culpable gene has not yet been discovered. Rare in nature, it affects children in age group 3 months to 5 years.

Initial symptoms are seizures and stiffness in limbs. Children fail to develop muscle tone. Cognitive processes, Muscular movement, motor co-ordination are severely affected. Alpers’ syndrome is progressive in nature. Loss of reasoning ability may progress into mental retardation and dementia. Optic nerve degeneration can lead to blindness. Liver malfunction results in jaundice.

Diagnosis is difficult as there is no any standard test for confirmation. Physical examination, Liver biopsy, EEG can aid the diagnosis.

There is no cure for Alpers’ disease. Treatment is usually sympathetic and intended to soothe symptoms. Neurologists may prescribe anticonvulsants to control seizures. This disease is extremely fatal and death can occur within a few months after symptoms occur for the first time.
