The research included more than 750,000 children belonging to age group 4 to 12 with a parent on active military duty. Among them 33,000 were diagnosed with ADHD. 4.1 % of children with ADHD suffered from irritable bowel syndrome compared to 1.5% children also suffering from irritable bowel syndrome but not from ADHD. 0.9 % of children with ADHD had fecal inconvenience while 0.15 % of children without ADHD suffered from fecal inconvenience.
Medications used to treat ADHD didn’t have any effect on this gastrointestinal disorder-as the researchers have reported. After adjusting factors like age, sex and birth order, fecal inconvenience risk was still six times greater and constipation risk was three times higher for children with ADHD.
One reason for this condition may be inadequacy of dietary fiber. Researchers explained that these children suffer from constipation for several years as a result of which, they don’t realize physical cues of going to washroom. And the “accidents” happen. Or they are often too distracted that they forget to go to the bathroom. It is also possible that these children are programmed to process and digest food more slowly than other children.
Researchers have advised the parents of children suffering from ADHD that if they notice constipation or fecal inconvenience, they should immediately bring it to the notice of pediatrician. They should try to instill consistent bathroom going times for their children. They should not yell at their children if any accidents happen. Researchers expressed hope that Lubrication therapy and behavioral medications will surely help these children.
The research is preliminary and although it establishes a link between ADHD and bowel problems, it doesn’t prove this association.
