Contrary to this observation, this rate rose 37% to 52% in women.
The study authors also noted the effects of radiation on satisfaction level. Women didn’t show any significant difference between their satisfaction rates before and after the transplant. However, radiation severely affected the men. They reported 18% decline in ability to develop physical intimacy, 32% drop in satisfaction, 26% decrease in quality of orgasm and 17% reduction in desire.
Researchers also assessed the cases where transplant was a failure i.e. the body’s immune system didn’t accept the new cells. They assessed its effects on sexual satisfaction. Men reported 21% drop in intimacy thoughts/ fantasy and 24% decline in overall pleasure experience. While women reported 27% decline in both these aspects. Overall effects were worse for women although their intimate physical activity increased after transplant.
Researchers believe that half of the patients who undergo stem cells transplant become unable to perform in bed 3 years after the treatment. They expressed hope that patients will benefit from pre-treatment consultation with doctors regarding its possible impact on physical satisfaction.
