A new study suggests that men who take testosterone supplement after minor cardiac procedure are more prone to suffer from heart attacks and other cardiac diseases.

The findings suggested that men who underwent testosterone therapy after angiogram had 30% more risk of suffering from cardiovascular diseases and death.9% of these men actually died.
However, the exact cause of this risk is unknown. Investigators have not accounted the potential differences between men who were given testosterone supplements and who were not. They didn’t examine the benefits of testosterone therapy in terms of energy, sex drive and happiness. Researchers acknowledged that this study is limited and results don’t prove that testosterone supplements are risky for men who are suffering from heart problems.
Some urologists and endocrinologists have warned that excessive consumption of testosterone supplements is costly and may lead to side effects like formation of blood clots, infertility or male breast growth. Worsening of problems like sleep apnea can also be experienced.
Researchers said that in some cases, testosterone supplements are highly beneficial. For e.g. if a person is young and has lost his testicles to cancer, testosterone therapy will pose less risk. However, if a person is older and sickly, risks outweigh the benefits. Researchers expressed hope that this research will be extremely useful for those who are undergoing this therapy. They will be in better position to assess their risks and benefits.
