The new research reveals that women who use birth control pills for longer periods say 3 years are at higher risk of developing glaucoma.

5th December 2013, USA (http://www.zeepharmacy.co):Women nowadays are using more and more hormonal contraceptives. They are relatively safe, easy to take and generally do not cause side effects. However, if long term view is taken into consideration, these pills may not be as safe as perceived. The new research reveals that women who use birth control pills for longer periods say 3 years are at higher risk of developing glaucoma.

Researchers analyzed findings of more than 3,400 women for the three years period ranging from 2005 to 2008. Age of the participants was 40 and higher. The findings suggest that women who take birth control pills for more than 3 years are two times more likely to suffer from glaucoma.

Why birth control pills are associated with glaucoma is not known. However, almost all of the birth control pills are hormonal. They contain either estrogen, progesterone or both. According to some previous studies, these hormones are related to increased risk of glaucoma. Not only glaucoma but risk of other eye diseases is greater after consuming birth control pills. Other risk factors for glaucoma are eye pressure, family history, existing eye disorders and being black.

Researchers expressed the need to have eye screening for those women who have taken birth control pills for longer periods of time. Along with extensive eye-checkups, regular follow ups are needed when other risk factors are also present. The doctors should also consider birth control pills as the potential risk factors for eye diseases and should not subscribe them to women who have preexisting eye disorders.

Although the study didn’t prove cause effect relationship, it is to be considered as important as glaucoma affects nearly 60 million people in the world and can cause blindness.

Researchers requested that these findings should be considered preliminary till published in some peer reviewed journal.
