If weather conditions permit, a prescribed burn will be executed on Thursday, January 8, 2009 by the Florida Division of Forestry in Nancy Payton Preserve in the Golden Gate Estates area, east of Naples, north of Brantley Blvd. and off Blue Sage Drive in Section 24, Township 49, Range 26, Collier County. The property is owned by Collier County under the Conservation Collier Program. The burn is a part of ongoing Division of Forestry fuel reduction and forest management programs and follows the Nancy Payton Preserve Land Management Plan in place to benefit the natural resources and wildlife that use the forest while lowering the overall risk of catastrophic wildfires.
Burning is scheduled to begin at approximately 9 a.m. Preparation work has been completed, and test burns will be done earlier in the day. The area targeted for burning is 64 acres.
Residents in the immediate area have been notified. Although a smoke management plan has been done, unpredicted wind shifts may cause smoky conditions to occur in the area. Those who are smoke sensitive due to medical or other conditions should take appropriate precautions. Anyone entering the area should use caution, drive with lights on in smoky areas and be alert for the heavy equipment.
For more information, call Christal Segura, Nancy Payton Preserve Land Manager at (239) 289-3310 or Michael Weston, Florida Division of Forestry, Caloosahatchee Forestry Center, CFA Senior Forester, (239) 690-3500 Ext. 118.
