(new) Life is Heald: Keep that middle finger tucked away, or face the costly consequences -
A while back, the head coach of the New York Jets was in the news for the wrong reason. While attending an MMA event in Miami, he was booed by many of the fans in attendance and responded with an obscene gesture. This bit of amateur finger puppetry earned him a $50,000 fine from his employer. I want to know why, since man first learned to fly with his fingers, have we all had to refer to a rogue finger flying a solo mission as an obscene gesture?

(new) Guest commentary: Government should regulate health care, not run it -
There are so many unseemly actions by Congress that contributed to Sen. Scott Browns upset victory in Massachusettes, some related to health reform. So many of us, regardless of party affiliation, were outraged that health reform should hinge on giving collectively bargained employees and government employees a tax advantage denied to everyone else; that offering $100 million to one state to get a key senators vote while, as Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said, California, which is nearly broke, pays part of it; that the newest Louisiana purchase should provide a special $300 million (which they might need as part of their recovery but not to buy their vote for health reform.)

When he plays in the ACE Group Classic Pro-Am in Naples today, he will be achieving a fusion most of us can only hope for.

(new) Naples - A great place to Eat!!! -
What a georgeous day in Naples! All over the news - reports of snow storms, flooding........... Not in Naples!! The sun is shining, the palms are swaying...even if it is a bit cool, it is, after all, winter. But what a winter - warm sun on your face as you walk on the beach and decide where to eat - try Noodles Saigon in North Naples and just north of Hilton Naples on the Tamiami Trail near Wiggins Pass. Fresh and spicy, this Vietnamese restaurants offers favorites which I have missed since moving down from the northeast. The spring rolls were quite good as well as the spicy lemongrass chicken which left just the right amount of tingling burn. We washed it all down with some Jasmine tea and contemplated where wed have dinner. Perhaps well travel south of Hilton Naples for that.......... Well, Im off to put away the great finds I purchased earlier from Miromar Outlets in Estero - Ive already "put away" the items from the Godiva chocolate shop!!!

Horrendous noise pours out over the stage time and time again during Theatre Conspiracys latest show. Someone cant sing. This is "Glorious!" the true story of Florence Foster Jenkins, "the first lady of the sliding scale," later described as the worst singer in the world.

For one Naples family, FGCU stands for Faramo Gulf Coast University. Thats because there has always been at least one Faramo among the student body since the university opened in 1997.

Phil Lewis: Adding fuel to the health-care debate fire -
I used to be a contributing editor, on a freelance basis, for Cardiology World News. Thats a trade magazine supported by companies that want to market stents, statins and other heart-care products to cardiologists. So, I feel qualified to comment on a raging international debate that made it to our newsroom this past week in the form of a press release. Well, at least Im as qualified as many who have joined the debate.

Ben Bova: Avatar exciting, even if films plot isnt entirely novel -
Avatar is the first Hollywood smash hit of the new decade, and deservedly so. I enjoyed the film, even though some of its key concepts are eerily similar to a novel of mine, The Winds of Altair, originally published in 1973.

Our corner of the world is standing up as a David to the Goliath problems in Haiti. At least two of the marquee issues faced by the earthquake-ravaged island nation and addressed by its rescuers resonate right here in Southwest Florida.

Ten of the 20 most dangerous roads in the United States, in terms of number of deaths, are in California and the first, second and third most lethal are in the Los Angeles area. The most dangerous, according to a Scripps Howard News Service analysis of 627,433 traffic deaths from 1994 to 2008 recorded by the U.S. Department of Transportation, is the 181-mile segment of Interstate 15 from Los Angeles toward Las Vegas.

Guest Commentary: Tim Tebows Super Bowl ad is good for society -
Today Tim Tebow stands as high as any 22-year-old American athlete can stand Heisman Trophy winner, BCS National Championship winner and National Football League draft prospect. Tebow is widely seen as among the greatest college football players of all time and is beloved in Florida and beyond. He stands as a counterweight and exception to the stereotype of modern athletes.
