(new) Cold War over but Russia still an international power, experts say -
The Cold War is over but Russia still has a significant role to play in international affairs. There are those who think Russian history is last centurys business, said James F. Collins, the former U.S. Ambassador to Russia. Im here to suggest thats not quite the case.Collins was one of two men who addressed the Forum Club of Southwest Florida at a Friday afternoon luncheon event at the Naples Beach Hotel. About 350 people attended. Michael B. Yanney, chairman emeritus of Burlington Capital Group, also spoke to the club. Both men have long-term personal and professional ties to the former Soviet Union: Collins was posted to Moscow in 1973, and Yanney first traveled to the Soviet Union in 1977 on an agricultural mission. The fear that possessed the United States for two centuries that a single, strong power would rise in Europe is now obsolete, Collins explained. Yet strategic reasons remain for forging relations with Russia. Russia basically is in touch with three key areas, Asia, Southeast Asia and Europe, he said. Collins described post-Iron Curtain Russia as a place of great transition, and where the majority of the people are trying to discover now what? The country weathered the global economic crisis with difficulty. Unemployment is rife, as are police abuses and questions about the leadership of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, he said. Yet there is a determination to create change within the country, he continued. Those who profited from the fall of communism often doing so by wantonly selling Russias natural resources are sparring off against those who wish to reform their country. He called the latter group modernizers.Even within this group, though, there is a schism, as some of the modernizers believe the proper way to rule the country is to retain old governmental traditions, especially the need fossr strong central control. Increasingly, Russia is a place where the outside world has a capacity to make a difference, Collins said. He mentioned how, when he visited Russia in October 1990, there were only 1,200 international phone lines; now, there are 150 million cell phones. Anyone can talk to anyone, he said. There is a broad and richer debate than ever before.Collins description of the modern Russia, even with its problems, contrasted sharply with Yanneys recollections of a mid-1970s Soviet Union. At that time, Yanney was asked to host the then-Soviet ambassador at his home in the United States. He took him to view Nebraska farmland, which the ambassador loved. After his visit, the ambassador invited Yanney to Moscow, and eventually, into the countryside. I really saw communism in its roughest form, Yanney recalled. Soviet communism didnt reward people for making change, so why should they change?Yanney was then asked to develop a plan to raise 25,000 acres of soybeans. Ultimately, he cultivated many business interests in the country, finally selling them all off in 2006. He praised the Russian people as intelligent, admirable and hospitable, and believes that their modified democracy has the strength to sustain itself. Like Collins, he noted with concern the countrys rising unemployment. He also urged residents of this country to support democracy and capitalism. We must become engaged and we should be passionate about protecting our democracy, Yanney said.

Get Organized: Tackling off-site storage ... is it really needed? -
When contemplating off-site storage, the most important decisions are: can you afford it and do you need it? Although one decision is not necessarily predicated by the other, once you consider the cost, you might come to the conclusion you really dont need it after all.

Brian Sullivan, Fox Business anchor, will speak in Naples on Friday -
Brian Sullivan, Fox Business Network anchor, will speak in Naples on Friday at the 2010 Munich Re America Executive Conference.Hell serve as keynote speaker for some 45 insurance company presidents, discussing his observations surrounding the current economic crisis. Last week, the Daily News asked Sullivan to answer some of our questions. Here are his responses:.Q: Have you been to Naples before? A few years ago with my parents and family on vacation. A wonderful area and great people.Q: What will you talk about as the keynote speaker at the conference?I am giving a presentation on the stock and bond market, investors biggest concerns at the moment and taking questions on what I am hearing regarding the economic outlook. The best thing about working at Fox Business is the incredible number of smart, successful men and women who come on the network and I get to pick their brains. Its humbling.Q: What have your experiences been in reporting the economic and financial crisis on TV over the past year? The most incredible aspect is the sheer volume of news flow. From that fateful day in September 2008 when the credit markets imploded to current day there has been a near endless stream of new developments. We have lived through the biggest bankruptcy in American history Lehman Brothers bailouts, bank failures, arrests and intense legislative activity from Washington, D.C. Ill never forget the day Lehman went under. My editor said go to D.C. I said when and he said now. I had no clothes but the suit on my back. I rushed to Penn Station, hopped an Amtrak and spent five sleepless days covering the unfolding crisis. My wife shipped me an extra suit and a quick trip to a Filenes Basement solved my other sartorial issues. I was scheduled to fly to Nebraska that weekend to watch my college - Virginia Tech - play football. Needless to say, I didnt make the game .. but I knew that I was bringing financial history to Fox Business viewers. Its history I hope we dont have to repeat.Q: What are your thoughts on the crisis? What do you see going forward? What have we learned? What I hope we learned and what we likely learned are very different things. Simple history is pretty clear that we are often doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past. Lets not forget that Florida went through a huge housing and land bubble and subsequent crisis in the 1920s! Im quite certain people after that said never again .. and look what happened. For now though I wish I could say the worst is behind us but Im just not convinced. There are still trillions in debt obligations to come due in commercial real estate, mortgages and corporate debt. Not to mention our federal debt. I think its going to be rough ride for a few years.Q: Have you done much reporting on Naples or Fort Myers and the housing crisis here? What are your thoughts on whats happened here and when might it get better? Unemployment remains high and jobs continue to be lost.Weve talked about the area on Fox Business extensively because unfortunately the area has been on the front lines of the housing story. You had some of the greatest home price appreciation and then subsequent drop in the country. So much of your areas employment relies on real estate whether it be construction, selling homes or many of the other industries in the housing halo that a housing recovery is vital to Naples and Fort Myers overall improvement. The good news is that there has been some stabilization of pricing in the region. The bad news is that stabilization doesnt necessarily signal a rapid recovery. But I do believe the very worst for home prices is behind us, though that doesnt mean prices will surge anytime soon. You cant improve until the job market improves. And thats reliant on housing. Its a bit of a vicious cycle. Q: How long have you been an anchor? Nine years. Ive been in financial journalism for 14 ... starting as a tape editor, then producer, reporter and then anchor. I was at the Nasdaq when it hit 5,000 (and then fell) and at the New York Stock Exchange when it first broke 10,000. And, of course, we are still near Dow 10,000, 11 years later, sadly. Ive lived through the tech stock bubble and housing bubble. Now we may be living through a debt bubble. Only time will tell but its my suspicion we are and, again, will have a tough few years ahead of us.Q: What is your role on Fox Business? Have you always had an interest in business news?I anchor the 11 a.m. noon and 1-2 p.m. hours on Fox Business with my awesome co-host Dagen McDowell. I also write extensively on our Web site, appear on Fox News often and travel covering stories. In the last 12 months Ive reported from London, Cairo and Dubai. Fox Business is a global business network and has shown its dedication to covering the biggest business stories, wherever they may be. In this global economy, they are often outside America and we are there. Q: Any other thoughts you want to add about Naples or your visit?Im looking forward to coming back to the area and hoping to see some first-hand signs that a recovery may be underway. We all want to see good news.

Rather than get tangled up in legalese and high-minded philosophy, we chose to list successes and failures by public officials during the past year, and offer everyday examples of the publics business that the public knows but may take for granted thanks to Sunshine laws.

If you havent been to Tigertail Beach on Marco Island, you are definitely missing a treat!Tigertail is one of the stops on the Great Florida Birding Trail and as many as 86 species of birds may be seen there, ranging from herons, egrets and terns to five species of plovers, marbled godwits, and occasionally roseate spoonbills. The waters of the lagoon hold many treasures dwarf crown conchs, true and banded tulips, lightning whelks, and pear whelks. The lagoon is also a nursery for many species of sea life, including blue crabs, shrimp, and snook. Across the lagoon, Sand Dollar Spit fronts directly on the Gulf of Mexico and offers excellent shelling which includes, as the name implies, sand dollars!

Letter to the Editor: Merge like a zipper -
The online responses to Jim Kelleys letter [to the editor, Merging of traffic at the Jolley Bridge, 8A, March 10] certainly suggests not only the anger that many people carry within them, but also the certainty of opinion that many of us continually voice.I have seen billboards in New Zealand educating rural drivers to merge like a zipper at the point where the highway narrows, and not before that point. It is clearly the more efficient and safer way to drive if all drivers follow that simple rule and drive within the speed limit.
