Youth Sports in Collier County.


The Naples Gators youth football, cheerleading and dance league has started online registration for the 2009 season. The Gators are Collier County’s oldest running youth organization, serving Naples area youth since 1958.

The Naples Gators have no boundaries, which means anyone from Naples and surrounding areas can join. Tackle football is for ages 6 through 14, while cheerleading and dance is for ages 5 through 14.

All practices and home games are held at Fleischmann Park. The spring session begins soon and is free to all fall registered participants. For more information and to join the Naples Gators go to www.naplesgators.com or call Steve Quinn at 537-5443.


Tropic Wave Fast Pitch is offering clinics and tryouts for girls ages 8 through 12 at the St. John Neumann High School softball field. The Tropic Wave 12-and-under and 10-and-under coaching staffs will work offensive, defensive and pitching skills plus conditioning at each session.

The girls from Gymnastic World of Fort Myers excelled in their respective age divisions in the U.S. Amateur Gymnastics Sand Dollar Invite held at Disney’s Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista last weekend. The meet drew more than 100 national and international teams.

Ashlyn Kammerlocher, a Level 5 gymnast, took first place in the all-around, earning first on bars, floor and vault. Also at Level 5, Kyla Geren placed first all-around, earning second on bars, beam and vault and fifth on floor. Savana Smith was second overall by placing first on floor, third on bars and fourth on beam.

Level 6 gymnast Marissa Nychyk earned second all-around, placing first on floor and second on bars and beam.

Jade Thomas took second in her Level 7 age group, finishing second on beam and third on floor and vault. Callie Longo was third in Level 7, placing first on bars and fifth on floor. Trisha Hughes placed fifth on floor.

Level 10 gymnast Michaela Chernoch placed first in the all-around, earning first on floor, second on bars, fourth on beam and fifth on vault. Jamie Shisler was, taking third on vault, fourth on bars and floor and fifth on beam.


The Winning Ways of Southwest Florida Basketball Academy begins Sunday at the YMCA of Naples. Directors will offer four instructional camps for various age groups. Each camp meets every Sunday for five weeks.

The shooting camp is for advanced boys and girls in middle school and high school. The cost is $149 for YMCA members and $159 for non-members. There will be two basic ball-handling and shooting camps one for boys and girls ages 6 to 8, and one for ages 9 to 12, and each costs $89 or $99. The guard-perimeter camp for middle school and high school players costs $89 or $99.

Michael Rummenigge and his Rummenigge Soccer Academy will hold a youth soccer camp in Fort Myers from April 8 to 11. The camp will be hosted by the Lee County Strikers at the Kelly Road Soccer Complex.

Rummenigge and his professional staff are present for the entire event. The camp will offer individualized training programs for children age 6 through 14 to optimize their soccer skills and abilities using both traditional techniques and the revolutionary Soccer Fun Park.

The Soccer Fun Park is an obstacle course of 10 activities including soccer bowling, soccer basketball, soccer loops, soccer header, soccer course and one-on-one soccer cage. The Soccer Fun Park is a brand new concept for both training and fun fitness with heavy-duty modular equipment that configures into a 10-station obstacle course.

By combining the Fun Park and traditional training methods, participants will have a unique opportunity to learn and perfect their soccer skills while advancing their play and enjoyment.

The South Florida Lighting Wrestling Club recently started its 2009 season. Practices are Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Barron Collier wrestling room now through May 14.

The Lightning is a USA-sanctioned club for ages 8 through 18 that teaches the basic fundamentals and advanced techniques of folkstyle and freestyle wrestling. No prior experience is necessary.

The Collier County Cubs 14-and-under baseball team will start practice soon, and coaches are looking for competitive players. Practices will be held locally and games will be held at Veterans Park, Seacrest Country Day School, Three Oaks Park in San Carlos and in Cape Coral.

Several day-trip games will held in the Bradenton area, and no more than two weekend tournaments are anticipated in the Orlando area. Team emphasis will be on basic skills, self-improvement, prepping for the next level, and level headed, positive adult leadership.

The Winning Ways Hearts & Hoops basketball camp is from 6 to 10 p.m. Feb. 14 at Estero High School. Parents can send their kids ages 6 to 14 to the camp and have Valentine’s Day to themselves.

K6 Sports spring basketball sponsored by Sports CLUB, for boys and girls in grades 1 through 6 will conduct two eight-week sessions on Sunday afternoons running this week through March 29 at Community School of Naples.

Unlike other recreation programs, which are run by volunteer coaches and parents, K6 Sports teams are coached by certified youth program professionals who teach and coach the game in carefully planned progressions. This is the perfect program for players who want AAU level instruction without the time or financial commitment.

Times for the sessions are from 3 to 4:30 p.m. for grades 1 through 3, and 4:30 to 6 p.m. for grades 4 through 6. The cost is $80 per child. Contact program director Bill Carufe at 821-7972 for more information.


The K6 Sports Flag Football Super Spring League sponsored by Sports CLUB will conduct eight Saturday morning sessions starting this week. Sessions will be at Vineyards Elementary School from 9 to 11 a.m.

This unique flag league offers instruction and games coached by experienced youth professionals. This league is a great opportunity for fall tackle and flag players to get eight weeks of additional instruction. For more information call 821-7972.


Registration is going on now for the winter season of youth sports at both the Greater Naples and Bonita Springs YMCAs. The season includes t-ball, basketball, cheerleading, soccer and volleyball.

The Greater Naples YMCA is offering basketball leagues for kids ages 3 through 17, soccer leagues for kids ages 3 and 4, t-ball for kids ages 3 through 6 and volleyball leagues for kids ages 8 through 18. The Bonita Springs YMCA is offering basketball leagues for ages 3 through 14, soccer leagues for ages 3 through 10 and cheerleading for ages 5 through 12.

The YMCA youth sports programs teach sports skills with the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility in mind. The Y emphasizes fun, fair play, skill development and teamwork. For registration forms and more details, visit www.ymcapalms.org.


Registration is open for the Collier County Lacrosse Association’s spring season for area youth. Teams will be formed in mid-February and games begin in early March.

Sign-ups and practices are under way for the Naples Sharks Youth Wrestling Club.

Come out and learn the sport of wrestling from a staff of dedicated coaches that have years of experience teaching young boys and girls the sport of wrestling.

The Naples Sharks Wrestling Club is a USA and AAU sanctioned club for ages 5 through 18 and practices Monday and Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. at Gulf Coast High School. For more information about the Sharks contact Shane Hillis at 784-7305 or Chris Parker at 572-0001.


Naples Progressive Gym, located on Pine Ridge Road, hosts a Family Open Gym every Friday from 6 to 7 p.m. for kids in kindergarten and younger and a school-age Open Gym from 7 to 8:30.

NPG also has Adult Open Gym and Tumbling Classes on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 8 to 9 p.m. Toddler Open Gym runs on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to noon for $10.


The new session has just started at Gymnastic World of Naples. The gym offers one free trial class for each child and has room in every class, from preschool to high school tumbling classes.

The gym has open gym eight times per week. Family/Preschool Open Gym is on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 to 11 a.m. and from 1 to 2 p.m. and it is $9 per child. Family/Adult Open Gym is Wednesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. and is $10 per participant.

Open gym for children 5 and older is Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and is $10 per child. A Special Needs Open Gym is offered from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday for $10 per child.

All of Gymnastic World’s open gyms include full use of the facility, including the bounce house, inflatable obstacle course with a 14-foot slide and the giant foam pit. The gym also hosts birthday parties every weekend. Call for availability.


Florida Athletics Cheer and Dance, a Naples cheerleading and dance facility, is taking applicants looking to join its fast-growing cheerleading team. Florida Athletics is located inside Gymnastics World of Naples on Trade Center Way.

Every staff member of Florida Athletics Cheer and Dance, including the junior advisors, is a certified instructor or has attended of a certified coaches conference. Owner Dinna Gilroy recently received her master certification in cheerleading and safety principles. Instructor Cassie Caso received certification in stunting and tumbling.

Florida Athletics offers teams for children ages 3 and up. The facility provides athletes with professional training in a safe, fun and positive environment. Florida Athletics is a proud member of the United States All-Star Federation and has NCSSE certified coaches.
