Collier Growth Management Plan changes mostly affects Golden Gate Estates

— Turning rural Golden Gate Estates into suburban, and even urban, subdivisions will comprise the majority of proposed amendments to Collier County’s growth management plan.

Tuesday, county commissioners said they wanted to make sure their constituents were aware of the changes that will be considered on Jan. 19, which is the day the county will transmit proposed changes to the state.

Holding his hands three feet apart, Community Development and Environmental Services Administrator Joe Schmitt said, “You’re going to get a packet this big.” The materials will fill at least three books, Schmitt said.

Of the changes, six of the proposed 10 amendments are in Golden Gate Estates, five of those are east of Collier Boulevard, Schmitt said.

Commissioner Jim Coletta is concerned that his constituents won’t get to weigh in. There’s tremendous contention out in Golden Gate Estates over two proposed shopping centers: a 40-acre shopping center at Wilson and Golden Gate boulevards, and a 56.5-acre center inching back from the south side of Randall Boulevard and fanning out from Immokalee Road to Eighth Street N.E.

Control over those two centers, and other changes, have pitted two Golden Gate Estates civic groups against each other. Some land use attorneys have asked commissioners to speed up the growth management amendments before residents get a chance to vote on Hometown Democracy next year.

Commissioner Tom Henning is also concerned about residents who live in old Golden Gate city being able to attend a meeting.

“A lot of them don’t drive, but they can walk to the (Golden Gate) Community Center,” Henning said.

He suggested a time-certain meeting for 5:05 p.m. either at the community center or in commission chambers, so those residents can attend after they leave their urban-area jobs.

Commission Chairwoman Donna Fiala asked whether the amendments could be considered in the evening after a regular commission meeting.

“It’s going to be an all-day event,” Schmitt said.

Commissioners will be amending the county’s future land use map and plan, he reminded her.
