6 Steps to Enjoy a Perfect Night’s Stargazing

Humans have been lovers of stars throughout recorded history. The universe is mind-blowingly vast and the night’s sky only allows us to see a fraction of it. It is hard to believe that one light year equates to 5.88 trillion miles and that the light that we see from our closest stars happened around 4 years ago! However, no matter how fascinated we are by our night’s sky, it seems that we rarely take the time to spend an evening dedicated to it. So if you’re a complete stargazing novice, here is a guide as to how to enjoy a perfect night gazing at the stars:

1. You will need a clear & dry night’s sky

I know it looks like I am stating the obvious. But in order to see the most stars you need the optimum stargazing conditions, which are: when the moon is less prominent as light from a bright moon can make stars look less visible. Low humidity & dry weather make the air clearer which will enable you to have a more distinct view of stars.

2. Make your stargazing evening as warm as possible with some 4.5 tog duvets

Unfortunately, winter time is one of the best times to stargaze. So make sure you wrap yourselves up in warm clothes; 2 pairs of socks, scarves, hats, earmuffs and gloves etc. And to be extra cosy and warm be sure to take some comfortable and lightweight 4.5 tog duvets along with you too.

3. A perfect hill location with minimal lighting

By choosing to look at the stars on the top of the hill, you make it easier to stargaze as nothing will be in the view of your observations. And if you ensure that the location has hardly any artificial light this will also enhance your stargazing conditions.

4. An astrology guide

Until my recent holiday to Hungary, I used to be hopeless at naming constellations. We camped at the top of a valley and we were spoilt with clear skies most nights. The view of the stars was so impressive; you could even see a slight view of the Milky Way! I was blown away! Prior to my trip, I only knew the name of ‘The Plough’ or ‘The Big Dipper’ because as some of you may know the constellation resembles the appearance of a giant wonky spade! But by observing the stars and then making reference to them in an astrology guide, I slowly began to remember the names of the constellations. After some practice you will be able to wow your friends and family with your newfound amazing stargazing skills!

5. A jam-packed picnic basket equipped with a flask, hot drink essentials & snacks

Make a meal of your evening by bringing along food and hot drinks. In Hungary, I spent most of my stargazing evenings with a chai in one hand a lovely large slice of carrot cake in another, it was perfection.

6. A camera

Not an essential item but you never know what you may see! It is always lovely to have photographs of special times. And if some of your friends end up drinking one too many then you may have some funny photo opportunities!
