Role of social support in healing

Social support acts like a magic in healing process. A new research suggests that persons who don’t get adequate support may experience more pain years after surgery or any major treatment.

Researchers carried out a survey on 687 patients who had rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis and underwent hip replacement surgery. Average age of this group was 62 years. Among all those patients, 8.2% rheumatoid arthritis patients and 7.8% osteoarthritis patients were socially isolated i.e. they didn’t have more than 6 friends or relatives, they were unmarried or they didn’t belong to any religious or community groups.

Researchers found that socially isolated patients are three times more likely to have serious and prolonged pain for two or more years after the hip replacement surgery than patients who had good support. Previous studies had linked social isolation with increased risk of heart attack, stroke and death. Researchers hoped that this study will be more helpful to find the role social support plays in dealing with many illnesses.

However, this research is preliminary. These findings should not be considered to be true until published in a peer reviewed medical journal. Researchers believe that further studies will aid to realize the role of social intervention in a better pain management. It can also be observed how social ties and support help the person to fight with a disorder.

The social support will help the patients to improve their quality of life. Researchers hoped that medications along with social support will increase survival rate of many patients.
