naplesnews.com The Farmer File: Pelching and the local dating scene

“It’s a free-for-all out there.”

That’s the view of the singles scene on Marco and Naples, from a single woman, 40-ish, attractive, fit and fun.

She and other singles gave my wife and me a variety of bizarre examples of their experiences in the singles social scene:

• Anybody can do anything and seem surprised when others don’t appreciate it.

“Some guys are into pelching.” That apparently means a surprise, excited and slobbery lips smooch, often in the first hour of the first date.

Non-pelchers too can be forward beyond belief.

“At a restaurant bar on Fifth Avenue, a guy came up to me and said, “Look, I’ve got $300 to spend on you. Am I gonna get sacked for this?” (By sacked, he didn’t mean fired.)

• One woman was asked on a date by a pastor in Naples. She was pleased, as in, Finally a guy I can respect and trust, a decent man.

“We went to a nice restaurant for dinner. After we were seated, this guy got down on one knee and prayed out loud, praising the Lord for being able to (be) out with me. Other diners assumed he was proposing.

“When the entrée came, he prayed again, loudly, giving thanks for the food.” He did that twice more before they left.

My guess is the woman was praying silently to let the date be over as soon as possible.

• A single man, 49, long divorced, met a girl on Match.com. After lots of e-mail chat, he invited her for a ride on his Harley. When he went to pick her up, “The woman who answered the door looked nothing like her online photo.

“After the bike ride, she asked me to take her to a gay bar in Naples.”

• A single man, late 40s, says a woman he met online asked, “Do you mind kids?”

“I said something vague. She said, ‘I have a 2-year-old son. How do you feel about other kids?’ I mumbled again and she said, ‘Well I’m six-months pregnant.”‘

“What are you doing on Match.com,” I asked.

“Because I deserve some loving too, you ¥%*/#%@&.” He moved on, giving her points for candor.

All the singles with whom we spoke agreed that many online date-seekers lie about their ages.

Says one single guy, “I finally met a girl I saw online and was shocked. ‘Your picture must be 20 years old. You say you’re 42 but you’re probably 62.”‘ She spat back, “I sit in a garage but it doesn’t make me a car.’

“What?” he asked, confused. She responded, “I mean I put the age I feel like I am.”

The stories go on and on, some not so bad, a few very nice. Still, a small group of single women are starting a “Singles Let’s Mingle” club on Marco Island.

Their first gathering is Saturday, July 21, 6-9 p.m. at the Esplanade Bar on North Collier Boulevard.

“We welcome singles from Naples too,” says one of the organizers, Suzie Norris.

“We have some icebreaker ideas and there’ll be live music, so it’ll be a good place to meet other singles.”

No pelchers please.
