Tallahassee- The state of Florida is holding onto nearly $1 billion worth of unclaimed accounts-- more than $36.7 million of which belongs to people in Southwest Florida! The Florida Department of Financial Services breaks it down by county:

-  Lee County-- there are 114,000 unclaimed accounts valued at $17.8 million
-  Collier County-- there are 43,000 accounts valued at $ 7.5 million

-  Glades County-- there are 7,200 accounts valued at $972,000
-  DeSoto County-- there are 5,000 accounts valued at $ 814,000

The state puts a priority on contacting people with the most money owed to them and holds onto the cash, no matter the amount, until it is claimed. Many people are surprised to learn there is money out there with their name on it! Janet Wilson found out on Friday she has an unclaimed Tiffany & Co. gift certificate waiting for her in Tallahassee. She said, "I had no idea. I mean I know what it is for, an old wedding gift." She added, "I've heard of people claiming things, but I never thought it would be me." If you have the last name Smith or Miller...we know there's a lot of you in the Southwest Florida phone books, so there's no surprise a lot of you have money waiting to be claimed.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - The state of Florida is holding about one billion dollars worth of unclaimed property for some famous names. That includes money that belongs to Governor Charlie Crist, former-Governor Jeb Bush and other well-known people. In all, Florida's unclaimed property vault holds seven million accounts owed to four million Floridians. Tomorrow the state will auction unclaimed items from safe deposit boxes. That means telephone company refunds, uncashed paychecks, the contents of safe deposit boxes, the balance of a bank account someone forgot about and more. Then the state spends two years trying to find the owners or heirs before the property is auctioned.
