Now that warmer weather is here, many homeowners are turning their attention towards home improvement and interior design projects. If it’s time for an upgrade or a new look here are five interior design trends that you’ll want to be aware of.

Design for social connection

In today’s technologically driven world, you don’t want your home to be just another place where everyone is glued to a screen, either a big one or a small one. Your home should be a haven where friends and family can reconnect and really engage with each other. With that goal in mind, go about decorating in such a way that social interaction is fostered. You can encourage interaction by arranging your furniture so that people are facing each other. Group furniture into conversation zones. Most importantly, don’t make a big-screen TV the focal point of a larger room. TVs should be banished to smaller rooms or you may consider hiding them in an entertainment center that has doors that can cover the TV.

Get outside

Keeping the previous trend in mind, you can encourage more social interaction by creating a nicer outdoor living space where people can congregate. Try to blur the lines between indoors and outdoors by making your back deck as comfortable as possible. Make sure there’s plenty of lighting so that social gatherings can go into the night. A great backyard deck will add a lot of value to your home as well.

Go natural

A popular design trend today is a classic, modern style than emphasizes white, neutral tones and light wood in its natural state. The good thing about this trend is that it’s DIY friendly. To get the natural look, you don’t want to stain the wood so all you need to be able to do is some light sanding and the ability to apply a clear coat of sealant. A white space with unstained wood creates a tranquil, stress-free environment.

Less is more

Everyone’s heard the saying, “less is more” and it definitely applies to interior design. A mistake many homeowners make is trying to do too much with a space. If you try to do too much, the space can appear cluttered. You want the interesting features of your home to really stand out so you don’t want to fill it with too many things that will only serve as distractions. Adopt a minimalistic approach and you’ll be surprised at the results.

Don’t play it safe

One of the most common mistakes homeowners make is playing it safe. If you’re remodeling to sell then you can try to go with all the safest options because that’s what’s going to appeal to the widest number of people. But assuming you’re redecorating for yourself, don’t be afraid to be bold and make decisions that you wouldn’t normally make. Be creative. Go with bright colors. Create an accent wall. Choose interesting pieces that you ordinarily wouldn’t.
