SOUTHWEST FLORIDA - A new school year at a brand new school, the students at Ave Maria are adjusting to all of their new experiences.
"I think at first some of them...seeing a sister is probably new. They were all staring at me trying to figure out what I was." Sister Mary Grace is one of four nuns teaching at the new grammar and prep school. Something Headmaster Dr. Dan Guernsey says is rare this day an age, especially for the sisters to dress in full habit.
"We have beautiful, young, vibrant nuns under the age of 30 working like crazy, making a change in these kids lives even in one day," says Dr. Guernsey.
Sister Mary Grace says she's one of the older ones in a growing community of nuns. "We're actually on a mission," says Sister Mary Grace to help and guide the students spiritually and mentally.
"We're really trying to find out what God has in mind for these children."
"They're warming up, because they've started talking, but the first hour they stared," laughs the teacher.
Despite what Sister Mary Grace perceives as the students first impression, she's already a big hit with her third graders.
Third grader Elizabeth Tucker says, "She's very nice, kind, gentle. I really like her."
The school has 136 students in its first year and room to grow.
Students at Ave Maria University start August 27th.
