A very unique pancake breakfast at a local church.

Porn and Pancakes By Lindsay Liepman, WINK News

FORT MYERS - Churches are using controversial ads to get people in the pews. The latest billboard is boasting porn and pancakes. But WINK News finds out, it's a way of reaching out to those who are addicted to porn.

Drivers on Colonial Blvd. in Fort Myers are taking notice. It's an ad for porn and pancakes, that First Assembly Ministries put up because they say porn is destroying families and people's lives.

"Porn and pancakes...they don't go together," Fort Myers Resident Curtis Douglas.

"That's really weird," said Jennifer Badilla of Cape Coral.

That was the same reaction the Pastor had at First Assembly Ministries in Fort Myers.

"I think the first time one of the guys, the young guys on staff said, Pastor, have you ever heard of porn and pancakes? I said what??" said Senior Pastor Dan Betzer.

But then Pastor Betzer found out, porn and pancakes is a men's breakfast aimed at preventing porn addiction and educating the public about the perils of pornography.

"Over and over again you hear the stories the sad awful stories of people whose lives have been torn-up by this thing of pornography," he said.

This isn't the first church to use provocative advertising to catch people's attention. You may remember www.mycrappysexlife.com. It was a billboard that attracted national attention for a series of sermons at Next Level Church in Fort Myers.

Another church put up an anti-abortion billboard that drew controversy in Bonita Springs. But so far, First Assembly says reaction to porn and pancakes has been positive.

"We've had a lot of people call and ask what it was but honestly it was overwhelmingly positive. The only negative thing was just what is this?" said Assisant Senior Pastor Brad Liebe.

The church has sold over half of the tickets available and they say, just like their billboard, it's a topic that can't be ignored.

"The church can't just sit back and say well, let's pray about it. There are times when prayers are not enough and you need to be proactive," said Pastor Betzer.

The event is September 15th at 8 am and features Special Guest Craig Gross, the pastor of XXX Church. Tickets are $8.
