NAPLES -- A traffic light that is near the Collier and Lee counties border should be in place this summer, if a three-way interlocal agreement plays out.

While the Wood’s Edge Parkway and U.S. 41 intersection is in Bonita Springs, apparently more Naples-area residents were concerned about the traffic confusion, said Florida Department of Transportation spokeswoman Debbie Tower.

It was the first issue taken up by the Collier Citizens Transportation Coalition, which was created in 2007 at Collier Commissioner Frank Halas’ suggestion.

While the group has since become a strong voice in the proposed Alligator Alley lease negotiations, its initial goal was to pressure FDOT to re-evaluate the need for a traffic light at that intersection.

They were heard.

Collier Transportation Planning Manager Nick Casalanguida said Collier is just waiting for the permits to come through.

Bob Tipton, Collier’s traffic operations manager, is working on those, said Connie Deane, spokeswoman for Collier’s transportation department.

Before contractor Southern Signal gets to install the light, Deane said the county has to determine what’s underground and move a drainage pipe.

Tower said all parties had a meeting about this intersection just last week.

“We have approved the design by Collier County. It was submitted to us last week... when we were down there,” Tower said.

When a design is submitted to FDOT by another agency, it must undergo several reviews, she said.

Tower said her understanding is that the signal will be in place within six months.

And it is a true interlocal agreement, which means more than one governmental entity is involved: Collier County designed it. FDOT will approve it. And Lee County will maintain the traffic signal.

According to North Naples Fire Commissioner Jim Burke, a founding member of the Citizens Transportation Coalition, getting that light approved was the group’s first success.

“It was the first thing we took on and our first victory,” Burke said.

Citizens Transportation Coalition Director Gina Downs, also a North Naples resident, chuckled.

It is “a victory that is a long time coming. And a longer time permitting,” Downs said. “Now, we just sit back and wait for FDOT.”
