A parade, then festivities at Veterans Community Park
Mar. 7 2009
MARCO ISLAND — Plans are quickly coming together to ensure Islanders that they can truly feel the presence of “green” in their lives and it has nothing to do with solar energy, wind turbines or any other alternate energy sources.
Marco Island is about to have its first ever Irish festival to celebrate St. Paddy’s Day this March 7-8.
“The idea of a St. Patrick’s day parade and celebration had been around for sometime now and we decided its time had finally come,” said Sons and Daughters of Erin, President Kathleen Reynolds, the chairman of the event.
The event itself will be a combination of a two day festival which will include an Arts and Crafts Show, food and music on both days and will be held at the Veterans Community Park on Elkcam Circle.
The Sons and Daughters of Erin southwestsonsanddaughtersoferin.org - Sons and Daughters of Erin will be selling traditional American hot dogs and hamburgers on both Saturday and Sunday to help raise funds for its charitable projects along with soda, beer and wine.
On Sunday, Islanders and visitors will have their choices of a number of Irish dishes, courtesy of Erin’s Isle and Cathy O’Clarks, who will be cooking up some Irish favorites for attendees.
The highlight of Sunday will be Marco’s first ever St. Patrick’s Day Parade and concert which will kick off at 1 p.m. and proceed down Bald Eagle Drive from the area of the health care center and down Bald Eagle to the VETERANS COMMUNITY PARK - MARCO ISLAND, where marchers and spectators will be able to enjoy the festivities.
Those wishing an application for participation in the parade should contact Steve Stefanides, the parade coordinator, at 250-8348 or Reynolds at 404-6733.
