ARTnews editor and publisher Milton Esterow will present a 45-minute lecture entitled How to Look at Art Without Feeling Inferior. He will discuss the international art scene, the art market, art journalism, art criticism, and changes in taste and fashion. Esterow will also invite questions from the audience. Says Esterow, I agree with Henry Moore who said, Art is a way of making people get a fuller enjoyment out of life than they would otherwise. Since he bought ARTnews from Newsweek Magazine in 1972, he has guided its growth into the most widely circulated art magazine in the world. Born in New York City, Esterow was a New York Times reporter and assistant to the cultural news editor, has lectured extensively around the world about art and the art market, and is the author of The Art Stealers. During the last three decades of his leadership, ARTnews has won 31 major awards for reporting, analysis, criticism, and design, the first and only art magazine to win these awards. The presentation starts at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 for Naples Art Association members and $15 for non-members and include light refreshments.

The popular singer, composer, arranger and writer, Paul Todd, will appear in concert at St. Pauls Episcopal Church, 3901 Davis Blvd., at 7 p.m. Friday Feb. 5.The experience of a Paul Todd concert is totally different from anything anyone has ever seen before. Although Paul is first and foremost a Christian artist, his concerts also include original, classical, popular, and Broadway selections. Paul accompanies himself by playing six keyboards simultaneously. His fingers and feet move at lightening fast speed, which the audience can see on a large mirror set up behind the keyboards. Known also for his smooth and powerful vocals, he combines talent with a sparkling wit to help make his concerts an unforgettable family night out. Columnist Jack Moss said it best, "Ive seen Todd do his thing in concert and I think hes impossible to top as an entertainer." Paul continues to perform over fifty concerts a year, most of them as fundraisers for charities.Tickets will be $20. The Life of Mary Todd Lincoln, The First Woman They Called CrazyAs the wife of one of the best known and loved Presidents in American history, Mary was thrust into the spotlight a position that suited her view of herself. Yet her view was not shared by many of her contemporaries. Her Kentucky background and her familys support of the Confederacy made her loyalties suspect to many but an even harsher opinion developed in her years as Lincolns widow. Was Mary really crazy as charged by her son Robert? Viewed with a 21st century eye, she seems more misunderstood than a lunatic. Three of her four sons, as well as her husband, preceded her in death, tragedies that haunted her throughout her life. Her outspokenness and refusal to conform to societys stringent rules, her need for attention and devotion, and even her misunderstood physical ailments all conspired to create a person so out of the mainstream that those in the 19th century judged her insane.

The Lee County Library System presents Lee County PugFest V: Toga Party from 12:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Sunday, January 31 at the Bell Tower Shops, corner U.S. 41 and Daniels Parkway, in Fort Myers, Florida. The PugFest, now in its fifth year, is a dog-friendly fundraiser for Library Systems annual Southwest Florida Reading Festival. This years theme is Toga Party! Pugs and owners may team up for a water relay contest called My Cup Runneth Over where teams will scoop up smaller glasses of water and carry them to the opposite end of the track to dump them into a larger vessel. They will keep going back and forth until the larger vessel is filled. Teams with the best times win. Six Pugs will be appointed King, Queen, and to the Royal Court. A $10 donation is requested for entry to this contest and it is limited to pugs only. Other highlights include a costume contest open to all dogs and a pug fashion show. Vendors of pet products and services will be on hand and a Chinese Auction offers attendees the chance to win great prizes.Lee County PugFest organizers are grateful to their venue sponsor, Bell Tower Shops, and to media sponsor Lite 93.7. Look for your favorite radio personalities at PugFest to judge the costume contest!Admission is free, but a $5 donation per family is suggested. All funds raised benefit the Southwest Florida Reading Festival, a free community event to showcase the librarys programs and resources, and to promote reading and literacy. For more information about PugFest or the Southwest Florida Reading Festival, call 239-337-READ (7323) or visit http://readfest.org

Long before chain grocery stores and bulk food emporiums, community members gathered once or twice a week in local and regional markets. Often held in town centers, these markets provided a place to buy or barter for goods and services. And yet, these gatherings also offered something far more vital: They gave community members a chance to reconnect with friends and the opportunity to catch up on the town’s news—or to hear the news and stories from merchants who had traveled great distances. Markets brought together locals and visitors alike in a convivial environment of wafting pastry aromas and carts colored by the array of fruits, vegetables, and flowers.
Today, this tradition survives in the farmer’s market. Thriving throughout the country, farmer’s markets bring quality produce fresh from the fields into the hearts and hearths of the city; they provide a profitable forum for local farmers and artisans to sell the fruits of their labors; and, perhaps most importantly, these markets create a social opportunity for each and every one of us to come together—every week—and share a little of ourselves with our neighbors.
We at the North Naples Green Market warmly invite you to take part in the beginning of a new market tradition right here in Naples! Join us every Saturday morning from October through April at the Collection At Vanderbilt.
Taste the goodies, smell the flowers, and hear the latest. Celebrate in an atmosphere alive with color, listen to the lively chatter, and watch the friendly faces pass by. And as the week begins—and the joys of market day seem far away—know that you are feeding your family with the very best produce Southwest Florida has to offer.
