Where: The Philharmonic Center for the Arts, 5833 Pelican Bay Boulevard, Naples

Description: Art historian John Stewart presents Degas, the Passionate Observer, the first lecture in the series Looking at Art, on Thursday, Dec. 1 at 10 a.m. in the Toni Stabile Building, located just south of the Philharmonic Center. The series is presented as part of the Philharmonic Centers Lifelong Learning arts education program.
Degas is known primarily for his paintings of dancers and racehorses, but what else did this protean artist focus on, and what was this restless, obsessive but also detached observer of 19th-century Parisian life really up to?
Stewart was raised in Rome, Italy, and worked for several years at the National Gallery of Canada on a major international Degas retrospective. In the mid-1990s, he co-founded Stewart & Hunnisett, Fine European Touring, where he develops and leads high-level cultural tours on four continents, specializing in trips for directors and trustees of distinguished museums.
Tickets to Degas, the Passionate Observer are $34. The series continues with Valzquez, the Genius of Spains Golden Age on January 12 and Manet, Father of Modernism on January 26.

Where: The Philharmonic Center for the Arts, 5833 Pelican Bay Boulevard, Naples
Cost: $34
Age limit: 18+
