According to Feeding America, some 35.5 million people, including 14 million American children, face hunger or are at risk of hunger every day.

NALC President William H. Young says that, as successful as the food drive has been in the past, it simply must be even better this year.

“Millions and millions of families are suffering — struggling to make ends meet and put food on the table,” Young said.

“More than ever, food banks, pantries and shelters need our help this year. As families count on them for support, they’re counting on us and we must not back off on our commitment.”

Young also noted that donations are particularly critical at this time, since most school lunch programs are suspended during the summer months and millions of children must find alternate sources of nutrition.

You may find it surprising to learn that homelessness among children in Collier County is on the rise, up to 601 children, nearly double from 307 children reported as homeless in 2008, and this estimate is a conservative one according to Karen Morgan, Collier County School District’s liaison for education of homeless students.

Vann Ellison, president and chief executive officer of the nonprofit St. Matthew’s House organization, says, “the shelter’s food pantry is giving out 50 to 100 percent more food than a year ago, often to families still able to pay rent but can’t cover food.”

Again this year, the drive will be held on the second Saturday in May in over 10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Guam. Last year, letter carriers collected a record 73.1 million pounds of food, 24,750 pounds from Marco Island residents alone.

So on May 9 letter carriers nationwide are conducting their 17th annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive where they collect unopened, nonperishable food donated by households for distributing to charities that serve the needy.

Soon you’ll find a collection bag (donated by Publix) in your mailbox to place your donation. We ask that homeowners hang the donation bags from their mailboxes, if possible, and not put them on the ground or inside the mailboxes. Condominium residents on Marco Island have been doing a great job in filling white postal tubs since early March with non-perishables and are encouraged to continue to do so until May 9. Houses of worship on Marco have also been collecting food by their congregants and delivering these generous donations to the post office for the past month.

In Collier County, the service group Collier Harvest partners with the Letter Carrier Food Drive to collect, package and distribute food to needy, worthwhile organizations in the local area. Many other local groups, service organizations and private individuals help to make this project thrive.

National groups playing key roles include Campbell’s Soup, Valpak, Feeding America, United Way and the AFL-CIO to give it the distinction as the largest one-day food drive in the nation, and probably the world.

Naturally, the Letter Carrier Food Drive could not exist if it were not for people like you who donate the food to support the needy and for the hard working volunteers who help pick up and sort the food.
