Some area dentists will pay your children for their sweet treats.

Ghosts and goblins will be scouring the neighborhoods in search of treats this weekend.

They will stuff their bags full of candy and haul it back home. For kids with real trick-or-treating staying power, it can be a staggering bounty.

What do you do with all that Halloween candy?

So much candy. So many options.

Michelle Persaud of Fort Myers lets her 9-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son have five pieces of candy on Halloween. Then she packs it up and takes it on her next trip to South America to give to the less fortunate.

Pam Benham's twin boys, 9, and daughter, 7, eat as much as they want on Halloween. Then the Fort Myers woman tries to get rid of the rest by giving it away to colleagues and neighbors.

Some area dentists are trying a completely different tactic. Instead of giving it away, they are buying it back.

Dr. Michele Laboda and Dr. Van Speas of Gulf Coast Orthodontics in Fort Myers and Estero are paying $1 per pound and matching every dollar to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

Last year, Gulf Coast Orthodontics collected almost 200 pounds of Halloween candy and donated $400 to Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

“Giving parents and children the incentive to get the sweets out of the house is one step closer to better health,” said Van Speas, who deals with diabetes firsthand.

Advanced Dentistry of Naples also plan to shell out $1 per pound.

More than 1,000 pounds poured into Advanced Dentistry last year. It’s the office’s fifth year offering the candy campaign.

Gulf Coast Orthodontics and Advanced Dentistry will give the candy to local charities. Advanced Dentistry of Naples will send the hard candies to troops overseas.

It’s good for everyone, said Deven Billingsley, a hygienist at Advanced Dentistry.

“Kids don’t need all that sugar,” she said “And parents really like it because they get rid of all that Halloween candy.”
