Dr. Piper Center Announces “Grand Gala” -Legacy Event to be held on February 26-Ft. Myers, Fla Dr. Piper Center will hold their first annual “Grand Gala” to benefit its Foster Grandparent Program, Senior Companion, Senior Employment, and Community Connections programs. This new event will be held on Saturday, February 26 at 6 pm at the Sydney and Berne Davis Art Center. The featured entertainment will be the smooth sounds of Wilson Williams and His Platters. Guests will enjoy a complimentary cocktail hour and elegant dinner, a live and silent auction, along with dancing. Tickets to The Grand Gala are available for $150 per person or $1000 for a table of eight and can be purchased by calling 239-332-3456. At this new event, the guests will be stepping back into time, circa 1900’s, when Dr. Piper was “making a difference” in Ft. Myers, commented Nida Eluna, Executive Director of Dr. Piper Center. The organization’s namesake, Dr. Ella Mae Piper was a well-known local civic workerand businesswoman, who established the first Beauty parlor and chiropody(foot doctor) office in Ft. Myers 69 years ago. In 1916, Dr. Piper moved her business to 1819 Evans Avenue near her home, and became very active in the Ft. Myers community and was well known as a philanthropist. Piper and her mother held annual Christmas tree parties for children of Dunbar Heights, and provided gifts, sang Christmas carols and heard the Christmas story. What started as a small gathering for 15 young girls had grown to a lively gathering of 600 boys and girls running celebrating on her front lawn by the time she died in 1954.
Upon her death, she left her property, now the location of Dr. Piper Center, to the city, to provide outreach to young children and/or senior citizens. The Christmas Day gathering for children has never faltered and Dr. Piper Center has expanded its reach to over 4,000 children.
Dr. Piper Center provides services, which meet the basic human needs, enrich the daily lives and enhance the independent life style of elders; as well as services that impact the lives of children with special needs and at-risk youth. The Center provides services in Lee, Collier, Hendry, DeSoto, Charlotte and Sarasota Counties. For more information, please contact Cheryl Holland at 239-332-3456.
