Mrs. Lavern Gaynor, active Naples philanthropist, was the honorary hostess of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida’s first Women’s Workshop for Wishes, sharing some of her experiences as a nurse.

The first Women’s Workshop for Wishes was recently held at the Club Pelican Bay with honorary hostess, Mrs. Lavern Gaynor, a local community leader and philanthropist whose name is synonymous with service.

Norm Wedderburn, speaker at the luncheon and president and CEO of the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Southern Florida said, “There are 15 children in Collier County waiting for wishes to be granted. The goal of the workshop was to gain local advocates that can tell the story and share the vision and mission of the Foundation.”

The workshop introduced the mission of the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the needs in Collier County to grant wishes. Mrs. Gaynor spoke on the need to get involved with the needs of others and about her background in nursing along with some heart wrenching memories. She expressed her compassion for children with life-threatening medical conditions and said she wished there weren’t so many children in our area waiting for wishes. Her desire is for all the children to be healthy and well. However, since this is not possible, she wished all could share the power of a wish®.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. Twenty-seven years of magic and more than 7,500 wishes later, the Foundation continues its mission to share the power of a wish® with ailing children. NOTE: The Wishmaker’s Ball fundraiser is set for March 18, 2011 and will be held at the Club at The Strand of Naples.
