Sisters of the Chi Omega sorority at Florida Gulf Coast University participated in the Kids for Wish Kids program to raise funds and awareness for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Local students of all ages have come together to raise funds to help make wishes come true for local children in Southwest Florida. The Kids For Wish Kids® program helps to increase awareness of the Make-A-Wish® mission and involves more people in helping to grant wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions.

Over the past 10 years, the program has generated $90,750 in funds to enable the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida grant more than 18 wishes. These funds were raised in public and private schools including elementary through high school. Likewise, college level students can raise funds through the Wishmakers on Campus® program.

Chi Omega sorority from Florida Gulf Coast University recently presented the local Make-A-Wish chapter with nearly $9,000. They raised the money by holding several events which included a golf tournament, a chili cookoff called Chili Con Chi O, and a kickball tournament.

Kids For Wish Kids is an extremely popular program for kids because it is managed by kids. They are responsible for forming committees, coming up with fundraising ideas, and carrying them out. Teachers and parents often serve as advisors, but ownership of the group belongs solely to other kids.

“Kids For Wish Kids does much more – it fosters the value of community service and leadership skills by providing hands-on experience in helping to grant wishes. It also provides a mechanism for building school spirit and creating an additional partnership between children and teachers outside of the classroom. The opportunities available for fundraising activities through the program are endless – anything from a bake sale or a dance marathon or student/teacher basketball game – it's all up to their imagination,” says Judith Yevick, West Coast Operations Manager at the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida.

“Kids For Wish Kids and Wishmakers on Campus allows children to help those closest to them,” says Wedderburn, president and CEO of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida. “Whether a classmate or other kids in their community, kids can share the power of a wish® at any age. Some of the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s most generous donors are those who go to school with some of our wish kids. That’s why Kids For Wish Kids programs are so successful.”

The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. Twenty-eight years of magic and more than 7,500 wishes later, the Foundation continues its mission to share the power of a wish® with ailing children.
