The study, purveys intuition as to why metabolism-related diseases such as diabetes or obesity are linked with certain types of cancer including breast, colon, pancreatic, and liver cancers. In this study, the researchers used fruit flies to understand the effects of diet and insulin resistance on cancer progression.
Cells utilize glucose for energy and to grow. The study shows that sugar activates oncogenes in the tumor, which then boost insulin sensitivity, meaning that the excessive glucose levels in the blood pour into the tumor, because they have no chance to go anywhere else in the insulin-resistant body. The researchers have recognized a three-drug combination that stops this signaling activity and tumor growth in its tracks, without affecting general cell function. These three drugs taken together substantially minimized tumor size and progression.
