Mental disorders associated by genetic variations

•Schizophrenia

•Bipolar disorder

•Autism spectrum disorders

•Major depressive disorder

•Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

Previous research from the group reported the first connection between the disorders, discovering that people with these disorders were more feasible to have mutation within the same four chromosomal sites. However, this most modern study has carried out the links in more detail, by using the similar genome-wide information and large data sets.

The researchers construed genetic changes in thousands of people with each of the five disorders, and estimated the genetic codes with those of people who did not have the conditions. The researchers deliberated to what extent pairs of disorders were linked to the same genetic variants. Results of the analysis displayed the following overlaps in heritability between particular psychiatric disorders as a result of common genetic variation:

•Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder - 15%

•Bipolar disorder and depression - 10%

•Schizophrenia and depression - 9%

•Schizophrenia and autism - 3%.

Overall, the researchers discovered that common genetic variation considered for between 17-28% of risk of all five disorders. The researchers say that these results, especially the genetic evidence of the link between schizophrenia and depression, may have significant implications for diagnostics and research.
