Stuttering is a developmental disorder usually observed in children. It is often believed to be associated with emotional disturbances. It can be a part of normal developmental process and may disappear after some years.
However, cause of stuttering can be physiological. It can be triggered by stroke or inherited abnormalities in language centers located in the brain. A new research throws more light on role of brain in causing this speech deficiency. The research states that children who stutter have less grey matter in brain compared to other children who do not.
28 children belonging to age group 5 to 12 were included in this research. Two groups were formed in which one group belonged to children who had stuttering problem. The second group was control group.
Researchers carried out MRI scanning of brains of all the participants. They found out that children who stuttered had an abnormal development in the inferior frontal gyrus region of the brain. This region is associated with language processing, understanding and speech formation. These children also showed lesser amounts of grey matter in the brain than their counterparts.
Researchers said that inability to produce first syllable of the word can be a speech-motor-coordination problem. They hoped that this research can be a first step towards further research. More testing can be done to assess effect of treatment on grey matter in the brain. It can also be used to detect involvement of motor defects affecting speech.
Researchers hoped that with better knowledge and information, effective and timely treatment can be designed for those children who are suffering from stuttering problem.
