Bottle feeding increases the risks of developing HPS in children-as the new research suggests.
24th October 2013, (http://www.Carepharmacyrx.com/) : Choosing bottle feeding as an alternative to breast feeding? Please don’t. Bottle feeding increases the risks of developing HPS in children-as the new research suggests. On the other hand, the benefits of breast feeding on enormous. The antibodies in breast milk may give child ability to fight HPS.
HPS or Hypertrophic pyloric stenosis is a narrowing of lower part of baby’s stomach. This condition prevents the contents of stomach from passing into small intestines. As a result, food digestion and absorption is disrupted. Baby vomit forcefully whenever is given any food. It is common among every 2 in 1000 babies for first two months. Surgical operation is required to dilate the pyloris.
The cause of HPs is unknown. Many doctors contribute it to maternal smoking during pregnancy, being a boy and being the first baby. Scientists have added one more risk factor to this list. They think that bottle feeding also increases the risk of HPS.
Researchers collected information on all babies born from 2003 to 2009. They compared data on more than 200 infants who required surgery with 10 infants who were born in same year but didn’t require surgery for HPS. They analyzed where bottle feeding played any role in the differences. Study found that nearly 20 in 100 babies with HPS were bottle fed. On the other hand, only 9 babies were bottle fed in every100 babies who didn’t develop the condition. Researches also acknowledged other factors which increased risk of HPS in babies. The researchers concluded that bottle feeding babies are twice more likely than other babies to develop HPS.
However, actual increase in risk may be too small. For e.g. if a breast fed baby has 2 in 1000 risk of HPS, it becomes 4 or 5 in 1000 for bottle fed babies. Although the study was conducted n the large scale and showed possibility of correlation of bottle feeding and HPS, it didn’t establish any cause –effect relationship between the two. Researchers could not ascertain which factor in bottle feeding increases the risk as some babies in study might be given breast milk through bottles. Quality of bottles especially plastics may have some effect on HPS.
