Researchers have invented a nonsurgical approach to reduce weight.
The research was conducted in rats. Researchers divided the rats into two groups. They were tested for their glucose tolerance, bile acid levels and overall body composition. Tiny silicone intestinal barriers were placed in intestines near the end of stomach in one group of rats. Second group was control group. As endoscopy in rats is not feasible, this process was performed surgically. Researchers compared the findings between two groups.
Researchers found that rats who were installed the gut sleeve showed reduced weight gain and improvement in balance between glucose and fats. They also showed the possibility of significant role played by bile acids in reducing the weight.
This method is least invasive and less risky as compared to other high risk methods like geriatric surgery. The gut sleeve can be easily inserted through endoscopy in human beings. The gut sleeve will work like any other intestinal barrier i.e. it will reduce absorption of calories and nutrients. It can be removed in the later stage if the need arises thus eliminating the risk of irreversible procedures. This method is suitable for those who have Crohn’s disease and other illnesses that make them not suitable for other surgeries. Researchers said that this technique also alters the food-sensing and satiation triggers in intestinal regions.
Although the effects are promising in rats, researchers pointed out that experiments conducted on animals may not produce similar results in human beings. If this method works, it will give a completely new dimension to weight loss techniques. Clinical trials in human will soon be administered under the investigation of a physician not associated with this research. It is not clear whether this method is risk free but it will soon be explained with more experimentation as the researchers have said.
