About 10% of kidneys available for transplant are rejected because they are at a higher risk for developing HIV AIDS or hepatitis B, C infection.

1st November, 2013 (http://www.carepharmacyrx.com/) : About 10% of kidneys available for transplant are rejected because they are at a higher risk for developing HIV AIDS or hepatitis B, C infection. However, a new research suggests that many of these “high-risk” kidneys are safe if the organs are screened using currently available methods. Researchers, thus, advanced that they should not be labeled as “high risk” kidneys.

Researchers observed 170 patients who had received kidneys that meet all the necessary criteria. The donors, whom these kidneys belonged to, were indulged in many risky behaviors. Around 57% used to take drugs intravenously, 26% has promiscuous and high risky sexual behavior, 12% were in jail, 7% were homosexual and 5% had received multiple blood transfusions.

The follow up of patients lasted for an average of 2.4 years. Among them, 86.5% of the transplanted kidneys were functioning very well and didn’t show any infections with HIV or Hepatitis virus.

Thus researchers concluded that so called high risk kidneys are relatively safe when they are screened using current methods. They should be labeled as “identified risk” rather than “high risk”.

Researchers hoped that their research will help utilize the organs that were previously discarded for their risk involvement. This will provide good outcomes to patients and reduced risk of transmission of infections.

Researchers noted that many a times, history obtained about donors is second hand or third hand and thus it may fail to give correct criterion for risk classification. They strongly argue that they do not agree with current system with classification which gives disservice to a long queue of patients.

Since the study is not yet presented at a medical meeting, researchers urged that data and conclusions should be viewed as preliminary till published in some peer-reviewed journal.
