Researchers said that early life musical training has a beneficial effect on sound processing by brain in old age.

7th November 2013 (http://www.carepharmacyrx.com/) : Most of us are familiar with benefits of music. It soothes our pain, reduces stress and increases overall feeling of satiation. Apart from that, music can also have some long term benefits. Music lessons taken in childhood may have tremendous benefits in old age. It increases brain’s speed to respond to speech in old age when many cognitive abilities are at deterioration.

As people age, many abilities begin to deteriorate. Individuals undergo brain changes that cause loss of hearing. The show less response to fast changing sounds. Consequently, it becomes a hurdle in their communication skills. However, when equipped with music lessons in early age, they can conquer this condition.

The study included 44 adults who belonged to age group 55 to 76. They listened to recorded speech sounds. While doing so, researchers measured electrical activity in auditory cortex- a brain part responsible for processing of sounds. They found that participants who had previous music lessons for 4 to 14 years responded to speech faster than other participants despite not even touching the musical instrument in 40 years. The difference was in milliseconds but makes a difference for older adults as neural timing gets affected with age.

Researchers said that early life musical training has a beneficial effect on sound processing by brain in old age. The more the childhood years spent in learning musical instruments, the faster is the response to sounds. The findings suggest that early life music training is useful to prevent aging.

Although this research has established an association between music lessons and health dividend in later life, it has not yet established the cause-effect relationship.
