The steroid injections or glucocorticoids contain an adrenal hormone cortisol which plays an important role in lung development of the fetus.

3rd December 2013 (http://www.kamagrasex.com/) – Babies who are born prematurely are often weak. They cannot survive unless they are given some additional respiratory support. This is because these babies’ lungs are immature and not yet ready for effective processing of respiration. Pregnant women who are expected to deliver prematurely are often given steroid injections for the lung development of the fetus. However, in the long term, these injections may increase a child’s risk of developing ADHD as well as other mental problems.

The steroid injections or glucocorticoids contain an adrenal hormone cortisol which plays an important role in lung development of the fetus. However, it is seemed to be linked with ADHD- a disorder recognized by compulsive talking and inability to concentrate.

The study included 37 children whose mothers were given synthetic glucocorticoids before they gave birth and 185 children who were born at the same gestational age but were not exposed to glucocorticoids.

The study included total 222 children. Out of them, mothers of 37 children received Glucocorticoids when they were pregnant. The comparison group included 185 children who were also born at the gestational age same as those in first group but their mothers were never given Glucocorticoids.

Researchers noted these children’s general mental performances when they reached the ages 8 and 16. It was found that children who were exposed to Glucocorticoids had lower scores on mental health and were more susceptible to develop the symptoms of ADHD. The risk was comparatively higher than the children who were never exposed to Glucocorticoids.

To confirm the findings, another group of 6000 children was created. It supported the previous findings.

There are many studies which highlight link between ADHD, child’s mental health and maternal stress during pregnancy. It is the first type of study which links ADHD with cortisol usage. This is because Synthetic Glucocorticoids often cause biological changes that happen when a mother is stressed.

Although use of glucocorticoids during pregnancy is linked with poor mental health of child, the cause-effect relationship has not yet been established. Since the sample size was small, the findings can be confirmed with more no. of participants.

Researchers have assured that despite long term emotional and cognitive disadvantages of glucocorticoids, they are currently available best remedy for infant health as well as survival. Its benefits outweigh its possible risks. Researchers added that if parents are concerned about their child’s possible risk of developing emotional problems, they should consult the doctors.
