Heart valve replacement which has emerged as an alternative to traditional bypass surgery is opted for by many elderly people and the risk of death from this surgery is decreasing-as the new research states. It has also established aortic valve replacement is a standard treatment even for very elderly people.
Researchers analyzed data of approximately 83 million patients who had undergone heart valve replacement procedure between 1999 and 2011. They found that as the time passed, no. of patients opting for surgery also increased. These patients belonged to all categories of race, sex and age groups. Most notably, it was greater for people above 75 years.
The follow up reports indicated that death rates 30 days after the surgery reduced by 4.1% a year during the entire study period. Death rates after the procedure were reduced by 2.5%. There was 1.1% reduction in readmissions to the hospital 30 days after the surgery. More and more people opted for less invasive procedure than traditional surgery.
Transcatheter aortic valve replacement is the less invasive option of treatment in which aortic heart valves are replaced with artificial valves. Traditionally, this surgery required coronary artery bypass in which blood vessels from legs or other parts of the body are used to reroute blood from the blocked artery in the heart. However, traditional surgery is more invasive and thus risky.
Researchers expressed hope that findings of this study will be helpful to those elderly people who are considering the option of Transcatheter aortic valve replacement for the treatment of heart vessels blockages.
