Multiple sclerosis is caused by malfunctioning of immune system which attacks healthy cells of brain and spinal cord.

12th December, 2013 (http://www.kamagrarx.co/) : Multiple sclerosis is caused by malfunctioning of immune system which attacks healthy cells of brain and spinal cord. A new research states that if tuberculosis injection is given as soon as the first symptom of MS occurs, it will help to reduce the possibility of occurrence of MS in near future. A vaccine which is now being used against respiratory illnesses can now be used against a central nervous system disorder.

Clinically isolated syndrome is often the first sign of multiple sclerosis. Its symptoms include numbing sensation and problems with sensory abilities like vision and hearing. People may also experience problems maintaining steady posture. Half of the people who are diagnosed with clinically isolated syndrome develop MS within 2 years.

The study included 73 people who were diagnosed with clinically isolated syndrome. Out of them, 33 patients were given tuberculosis medicine known as Bacille Calmette-Guerin vaccine. Remaining 40 were given a placebo injection.

Participants went through monthly MRI scans in the first six months of study. Brain scanning was administered with the purpose of studying the lesions in the brain associated with MS. In the next year, participants were administered a drug namely interferon beta-1a which is given to MS patients. After the drug treatment they received the course of treatment determined by their respective neurologists. After 5 years, participants were checked to see if they had developed MS.

Researchers found that on average, eight lesions were found in those participants who received a placebo injection. On the other hand, this average was only 3 in those participants who were administered the vaccine. After 5 years, 70% of the participants who had received placebo injection actually developed multiple sclerosis. It was only 42% in those who had received tuberculosis injection. The tuberculosis vaccine seemed to protect patients from the multiple sclerosis.

Researchers are not yet clear about how this vaccine prevents multiple sclerosis. It is believed to be caused by reduction in brain inflammation which is responsible for formation of brain lesions. Researchers expressed the hope that tuberculosis vaccine will be of great help of MS patients who have brain lesions.

However, researchers have advised against the use of tuberculosis vaccine in MS patients as its long term effects and safety hazards are not yet known.
