Risk of breast cancer tied with density of breast tissues - Realpharmacyrx.co

A recent research throws light on the possible relationship between breast cancer and density of breast tissues. It states that the rate at which density of breast tissues changes as a woman ages determines whether she is at the higher risk of breast cancer.

The study included 282 women who were diagnosed with breast cancer and 317 women who were not suffering from this disease. Both the groups of patients underwent mammography and an automated breast density test.

It was found those women below the age of 50 and who had breast cancer showed greater breast density than women under the age of 50 years but who didn’t have breast cancer. Healthy women showed steady loss in breast density after the years as they aged. On the other hand, there were variations in density losses among the women who had breast cancer.

Researchers concluded that women under 50 years of age have higher risk of developing density associated breast cancer. In this condition, the cancer is more aggressive in nature. Tumors are often large in size and risk of recurrence is also higher. They expressed the possibility of different biological mechanisms for difference in density of normal breasts and cancerous breasts.

Breast density is already considered as a major risk factor associated with breast cancer. The density can be measured by mammography or Breast MRI screening.

Researchers advised that women who have extremely dense breast should opt for yearly mammography or screening tests. They should also consult their doctors. However, breast MRI is an expensive test and has high false positive. It is invasive as well as time consuming.

Experts said that additional screening for women with dense breast tissues is needed to establish the findings. The findings and conclusions of this study should be considered preliminary till published in some peer reviewed journal.
