Avion Lawson + Jakaris Taylor + Nathan Walker

What were you thinking, little dudes?

Away you go, Avion Lawson - 14 years of age and you go ahead and join the crowd. Crowd joining is typical enough for your age. You want to play the games the older kids are playing. A game of pick-up basketball wasn't enough? Play a game of quarters and Rummy 500? Maybe pick up boxing or chess or join the Boy Scouts? But no, what you did to that boy and mom is nothing compared to what you will find quite soon.

Jakaris Taylor, you should have started to get some sense of what's going on. Consequences may be far from your mind, but not all that far. You should've stopped and thought, "Gee, maybe this ain't such a good idea." You could've talked Nathan out of this, no?

Nathan Walker, were you the leader of the pack? Or one of the pack? If this was your brainiac idea, you KNEW it was a bad idea. At 16, there's no doubt you were fully aware of the consequences. But you let anger take sway - and for reckless fun you could have done any one of 1,000 other things - for whatever reasons - and through anger you will lead the rest of your life. Behind bars, it is the hope, where gang rape has new meaning.

Mother & son, if you move back to Haiti, we would not blame you. We hope you get lots of counselling and assistance, for we cannot imagine the horrors, no matter how explicit the newspapers may be.

We pray for you recovery, and we pray for your justice.

Teen suspects in Dunbar Village held without bond

By Jerome Burdi

South Florida Sun-Sentinel

July 20, 2007

The three teenage suspects arrested in the Dunbar Village gang rape appeared before a judge Thursday to face their charges as adults. All were ordered held without bond.

Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Paul Moyle told Jakaris Taylor, 15, and Nathan Walker Jr., 16, that because their charges are punishable by life in prison they are ineligible for bond. The third suspect, Avion Lawson, 14, is to appear again this morning to face the charges. His lawyer, Bert Winkler, did not show up. He said he was not informed of the court date.

The teens were quiet through the hearing, only answering Moyle's questions. He ordered them not to contact the victims or their family members, witnesses or co-defendants.

Police are searching for seven more suspects in the June 18 attack in the West Palm Beach housing project, in the 1700 block of Division Avenue.

Walker and Lawson's mothers left without comment. Taylor's lawyer, Chris Haddad, said despite his client's grin to the cameras following his arrest, he now understands the gravity of the charges all three boys face: eight counts of sexual battery by multiple perpetrators, two counts of kidnapping and one count of promoting sexual performance by a child, grand theft motor vehicle and burglary with assault or battery.

"Anyone in that situation would be concerned, and he certainly is," Haddad said. "I would stress an indictment is not evidence of guilt."

Walker's lawyer, Robert Gershman, had an associate in court. Reached later by phone, he said he was looking for a mental health expert to evaluate Walker.

"I think his education comes from growing up without a father," Gershman said. "Stability in the house was nonexistent, that's for sure. "He's so young and in a horrible position right now."

The victim, a 35-year-old mother, told police as many as 10 men beat, raped and sodomized her over a period of three hours the night of June 18 inside her Dunbar Village apartment. Police found Lawson through DNA left in a condom at the scene and the other two through fingerprints left behind. Detectives still are searching for witnesses to help identify other suspects, but keep running up against a wall of silence prevalent in the streets where residents fear for their lives.

Anyone with information should call detectives Lori Colombino at 561-822-1659, David Lefont at 561-822-1670 or Crime Stoppers at 800-458-8477. Callers can remain anonymous.
