Atarax tablets contain the active ingredient hydroxyne which is a sedating antihistamine medicine.

This medication is an antihistamine with anticholinergic effect, prescribed for anxiety and tension. It is also used for pruritus and urticaria.
When it is not to be taken (Contraindications):
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity and during early pregnancy.
Patients who have shown previous hypersensitivity to hydroxyzine hydrochloride, cetirizine, other piperazine derivatives, aminophylline or ethylenediamine, or any of the excipients of Atarax.
Asthmatics that have previously experienced a serious anti-histamine-induced adverse bronchopulmonary effect.
Porphyria Category C: Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks. Indication:
Atarax is indicated to assist in the management of anxiety in adults.It is indicated for the management of pruritus associated with acute and chronic urticaria, including cholinergic and physical types, and atopic and contact dermatitis in adults and children. Mechanism of action:
Competitively blocks the effects of histamine at peripheral H1 receptor sites; has skeletal muscle relaxing, bronchodilator, antiemetic and analgesic properties.
Dosage & When it is to be taken:
Pruritus: The recommended dose is 25 mg given 3 or 4 times daily.
Anxiety and tension: The recommended dose is 50 to 100 mg 4 times daily.
The dosage is based on your age, medical condition, and response to treatment. In children, the dosage may also be based on weight. Do not increase your dose or take this medication more often than directed.
How it should be taken: It comes as a tablet, syrup and drops to take by mouth, with or without food.It also comes as a solution for injection to be administered by a healthcare provider into the large muscle. Warnings and Precautions:
Caution should be exercised in patients with asthma, increased eye pressure, difficulty in urinating, intestinal blockage, prostate disease, blood dyscriasis, any allergy, who are taking other medications, during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It may cause drowsiness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication. It should not be used in newborns.
Side Effects: Anticholinergic - Dry mouth. Central Nervous System - Drowsiness and headache. Body as whole - Allergic reactions. Psychiatric - Hallucinations. Skin - Itching, rash and hives.
Other Precautions:
Avoid alcohol consumption.
Storage Conditions:
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of the reach of children. Store it at room temperature.
