When prospective clients contact us it’s normally because they have sought us out through the Internet using the term Data Recovery Reading.

And when they have done so and contacted us at Hard Drive Recovery Reading one of the most frequently asked questions we get is: why is my hard drive clicking?

With this in mind one of our friendly and professional staff will ask a series of questions that will help to diagnose the problem. And let’s be under no illusion; if your hard drive is making a sound resembling a click then there is a problem.

It would seem that many computer users consider the sound of a hard drive clicking to be a nuisance but one they can live with if the hard drive continues to function. And for the most part the hard drive will function…for a while. But in the same way a spluttering exhaust can signify a problem with a car’s engine so too a clicking hard drive can signify a problem is not that far off.

We make one recommendation to anyone who experiences the sound of a clicking hard drive switch off immediately and contact the experts. If you continue using a hard drive that is in the throes of making such a noise (and let’s face it if you’ve heard it then it is unmistakable) then the chances are not only are you increasing the risk of damage to your data but also to the drive itself.

Generally what causes a hard drive to click is a problem with the internal workings – or the internal hardware – if you will. Within the workings of a hard drive are very small but very sophisticated pieces of technology that in some instances are almost undetectable to the human eye but can still make the noise you hear.

One such piece of hardware is the actuator arm, which in reality is only one twentieth the width of a human hair. Imagine the size of such a thing if you can? It is so thin that even the keenest eyed individual would struggle to see it but because it moves at fifty plus times a second it can make a noise if it snaps.

When it snaps it causes the read/write heads to lose their way and this is where the problem intensifies, as too does the noise. Passing over the platters these read/write heads are cushioned between a thin layer of air that stops them from actually meeting with the platters but the knock on effect of the actuator arm snapping and causing the read/write heads to jump out of alignment means that they touch the platters, causing them also to misfire.

Looking at a hard drive one might think that such things are not enough to cause such a loud noise but they are and often do. It is probably best summed up like this; if it is clicking then the time bomb is ticking and the resultant time bomb going off is a loss of the hard drive and potential loss of data.

We can offer you but one piece of advice in this instance: if you are using a computer that has suddenly started to make the clicking sound we have referred to then stop immediately. Shut it down in the correct way, power down and contact us; ensuring along the way that no one else has access to the machine.
