James Martin -- on Mar. 20 2014

The mention of psychoanalysis is immediately connected to the name of Sigmund Freud, the Austrian neurologist who made great strides in this science.

Any event that is going into the records and databases of the human brain takes with it the multimedia experience of audio, video and the sensory information. Our memory of a trip or a vacation comes with the smells and the tastes that we encountered. In a similar way, a memory of a painful event comes with some accompanying information of the conditions and circumstances that prevailed during the bitter experience. When these conditions are encountered again, the memory of the bitter experience can come flooding back into the present and cause a relapse into the harshness of the situation. The concept of EMDR training makes the connection between the eyes and the brain as one is the medium to view the world and through them the worldly encounters that we meet and resolve each day of our lives. Any process that helps a person to outlast the memory of a bad experience will be a gift that is invaluable. People will be boundless with happiness when they realise that there is a way to put the past into a place from where it cannot disperse any remnants of the injured feelings that are emitted with a retrieval of the memory. Keeping the lessons learned from the experience, the negative aspects are put into perspective and are therefore not brought to the spotlight anymore. The mention of psychoanalysis is immediately connected to the name of Sigmund Freud, the Austrian neurologist who made great strides in this science. The methods involved were practiced through the pursuit of dialogue with the patient to get at the subconscious and the memories that might lie dormant and undiscovered without an effort to go looking for them. Freud made a connection between feelings that are repressed and posited that these are at the core of the unconscious state. The outbursts of hysteria were linked to concepts that had entered into the unconscious being of the person, Freud said. His most famous book is The Interpretation of Dreams in which he revealed that dreams are the attempts of the brain to achieve the unachieved aspirations of the individual. It would seem to be an attempt at compromise and self-consolation. However, the insights in the book with regard to predictions of the future are what can be very interesting to the reader who wishes to understand the meaning of a dream that they are able to recollect in detail. Dreams can be meaningful but it is the sense of fear that can be offsetting after having a dream that is dreadful. The concept of EMDR goes into the realm when dreams are known to occur in the stage of sleep that is described as Rapid Eye Movement. Making the connection between the movement of the eyes and the activity that takes place in memory is what this method of treatment achieves. Patients can clear out the aspects of a memory that is causing considerable distress to them in a very short span of time with EMDR treatment.
