Roxithromycin can be used to treat some respiratory tract infections (RTIs) and their complications, as well as some other infections caused by bacteria.

Indications :

Your health professional may prescribe roxithromycin if you have an infection caused by bacteria and you are at risk of the complications of the infection.

This drug is used to treat :

 some respiratory tract infections
 Pneumonia (lung infection).

Erythromycin can also be used for treating skin infections caused by other bacteria.

Mechanism of action :

Roxithromycin works by killing the bacteria that cause respiratory tract infections, including pneumonia and other infections. Roxithromycin prevents the bacterial cell from carrying out essential functions that are necessary for life, (i.e. making the protein building blocks that make up the bacterial cell), which stops the bacteria from multiplying.

Side effects :

Some people experience an allergic reaction to roxithromycin or other antibiotics. This is due to an over-reaction of their immune system to the antibiotic.

Symptoms of an allergic reaction can include :

 hives (large, red raised areas on the skin)
 swollen lips, tongue or mouth
 fever (a temperature of 38.5°C or higher)
 breathing problems
 Fainting.

Drug interaction :

Tell your health professional if you are taking medicines containing any of these active ingredients.

 Cabergoline (used to treat Parkinson’s disease): roxithromycin may increase the amount of cabergoline in the blood. This may increase the effect of the medicines and increase the chance of side effects. You may need to take a lower dose of cabergoline.

 Midazolam (used as a sedative during short medical procedures): roxithromycin may increase the concentration of midozalam in the blood and increase its sedative and other side effects. You may need to take a lower dose of midazolam or a different sedative.

 Warfarin (used to prevent blood clots): it may affect the way warfarin is taken up by the body, increasing the risk of bleeding. You may need to take another type of antibiotic. Alternatively, your doctor will monitor your blood clotting, and your dose of warfarin may need to be adjusted accordingly.

Storage :

Keep in the original packaging until you need to take it. Store below 25°C in a dry place, out of the reach of children.
