Depakote is used in the treatment of epilepsy

It is sometimes used together with other seizure medications.Depakote is also used to treat manic episodes related to bipolar disorder (manic depression), and to prevent migraine headaches.What is Depakote used for?This product comes in different dosage forms. Depakote (divalproex sodium) Tablets for Oral use and Depakote ER (divalproex sodium) Tablet, Extended Release for Oral use are prescription medications used:

• To treat acute manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder
• Alone or with other medications to treat:
• Complex partial seizures in adults and children 10 years of age and older
• Simple and complex absence seizures, with or without other seizure types
• To prevent migraine headaches.

Precautions:

You should not use this drug if you are allergic to divalproex sodium, or if you have:

• liver disease;
• a urea cycle disorder; or
• a genetic mitochondrial disorder such as Alpers' disease or Alpers-Huttenlocher syndrome, especially in a child younger than 2 years old.

Serious side effects including:

• Serious liver damage that can cause death, especially in children younger than 2 years old. The risk of having serious liver damage is more likely within the first 6 months of treatment.
• Taking this tablet during pregnancy can harm your unborn baby; increasing the risk for serious birth defects [e.g. brain and spinal cord (spina bifida)] and the risk of your child for having a lower IQ.
• Inflammation of your pancreas that can cause death.
• Increased risk of suicidal thoughts and actions. Be alert to sudden change in mood, behaviors, thoughts or feelings.
• Contraindication
• Drinking alcohol may increase certain side effects of Depakote.
• It may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert.
• Avoid exposure to sunlight or tanning beds. Divalproex sodium can make you sunburn more easily. Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) when you are outdoors.

Missed dose:Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.Storage:Store at room temperature. Protect from heat, light and moisture. Keep away from reach of children.
