Femara lowers estrogen levels and is used to treat breast cancer in postmenopausal women. It is often given to women who have been taking tamoxifen (Nolvadex, Soltamox) for 5 years.

22 April 2014, Perth, (http://royaldrugstore.co/) : Femara is a form of hormone treatment known as an aromatase inhibitor, which works by reducing the amount of estrogen produced in the bodies of postmenopausal women. It has been approved for:

Treatment of postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive or unknown advanced breast cancer that was progressing after anti-estrogen therapy—in 1997 First-line treatment of postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive or unknown locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer—in 2001 Extended adjuvant treatment of postmenopausal women with early breast cancer who have received prior standard adjuvant tamoxifen therapy—in 2004

Precautions:

The use of this drug may cause decreases in the density of your bones, increases in bone fractures and osteoporosis. Monitoring of the density of your bones may be required. Some patients taking it had an increase in cholesterol. Your doctor may require the monitoring of cholesterol in your blood.

Some women reported fatigue, dizziness and drowsiness with it. Until you know how it affects you, use caution before driving or operating machinery. Some women had moderate, temporary decreases in white blood cell counts. The medical significance of this is not known.

Side effects:

The most serious side effects seen with this drug are bone effects (fractures, decreased bone density and osteoporosis) and increases in cholesterol. Other common side effects seen with this product include joint pain, nausea, weight decrease, vaginal irritation, and pain in the extremities. Other important less commonly reported side effects include blood clots, other cancers, stroke, heart attack and endometrial cancer. Femara is a once-daily, convenient prescription tablet. Your doctor may tell you to take Femara every other day if you have severe liver disease. Always take your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Important imformations:

• It may interact with other medicines. Let your doctor know about any medication you are taking, including non-prescribed drugs such as complementary therapies, vitamins and herbal drugs. • Keep the tablets in a safe place, out of the reach of children. • Keep the tablets in the original packaging and store them at room temperature, away from direct heat and sunlight. • Don't worry if you forget to take your tablet. Do not take a double dose. The levels of the drug in your blood will not change very much, but try not to miss more than one or two tablets in a row. • If your doctor decides to stop the treatment, return any remaining tablets to the pharmacist. Do not flush them down the toilet or throw them away. • Remember to get a new prescription a few weeks before you run out of tablets and make sure that you have plenty for holidays. • Avoid eating grapefruit and drinking grapefruit juice.

Storage:

Store at room temperature. Protect from heat, light and moisture. Keep away from reach of children.
