Meaning:
It is a medical condition where the heart rhythm is irregular or rapid. It results from abnormal electrical impulses takes place in the upper chamber of the heart. This causes heartbeat to be irregular and usually fast. This can continue for lifetime or sometimes it can come and go.
Causes:
Most common causes of arterial fibrillation include continuous consumption of liquor, harmful substance and smoking of cigarettes, person having pneumonia, hyperthyroidism, blood clot in the lungs (pulmonary embolism), heart valve disease, high blood pressure, sick sinus syndrome, cardiomyopathi (heart muscle disease), advance of age )person more than 45 years have high chance to get affected by arterial fibrillation.
Symptoms:
It’s very difficult to detect the signs and symptoms of arterial fibrillation. But most common symptoms of this condition include palpitations (sensation of rapid/irregular heartbeat), tiredness, shortness of breath, chest pain, light headed or pain.
There are few patients who can have many other destructive symptoms if not taken preventive measures very soon such as congestive heart failure, shortness of breath, angina, hypotension (low blood pressure).
Treatments:
Patient may be prescribed to have heart surgery by surgeons such as valve repair or artery bypass surgery.
Clopidogrel (plavix) is a medication used to prevent clot formation in cardiovascular diseases including a fib. To reduce the clot formation in patient, other medicine prescribed by cardiologists are pradaxa, lovenox, and xarelto, Warfarin, or use of aspirin are better option to lower the risk of stroke.
The most commonly used medicine to control heart rhythm rather than the rate is antiarrhythmia medications which includes amiodarone (cordarone, pacerone), sotalol (betapace), propafenone (rythmol), and flecainide(tambocor) are very effective.
Beta-blockers are the medicine used to decrease the heart rate. Examples of this medication include esmolol, atenolol, propranolol, metoprolol, verapamil, and diltiazem.
Other medications include medicine such as ibutilide, dronedarone, and quinidine are prescribed to treat arterial fibrilliation.
