It is a derivative of oxicam, closely related to piroxicam, and falls in the enolic acid group of NSAIDs. Meloxicam starts to relieve pain about 30–60 minutes after administration.

It is a derivative of oxicam, closely related to piroxicam, and falls in the enolic acid group of NSAIDs. Meloxicam starts to relieve pain about 30–60 minutes after administration.
Action:
Meloxicam inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX), the enzyme responsible for converting arachidonic acid into prostaglandin H2—the first step in the synthesis of prostaglandins, which are mediators of inflammation. Meloxicam has been shown, especially at its low therapeutic doses, selectively to inhibit COX-2 over COX-1.
Meloxicam concentrations in synovial fluid range from 40% to 50% of those in plasma. The free fraction in synovial fluid is 2.5 times higher than in plasma, due to the lower albumin content in synovial fluid as compared to plasma. The significance of this penetration is unknown, but it may account for the fact that it performs exceptionally well in treatment of arthritis in animal models.
Precautions:
To make sure you can safely take meloxicam, tell your doctor if you have any of these other conditions:
• a history of heart attack, stroke, or blood clot; • heart disease, congestive heart failure, high blood pressure; • a history of stomach ulcers or bleeding; • liver or kidney disease, • a seizure disorder such as epilepsy; • asthma; • polyps in your nose; or • if you smoke.
Dosage:
Meloxicam is usually taken once per day. You may take meloxicam with or without food. Shake the oral suspension (liquid) well just before you measure a dose. Measure the liquid with a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup, not with a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one. If a child is taking this medication, tell your doctor if the child has any changes in weight. The dose of this medicine is based on weight in children. The maximum amount of meloxicam for adults is 15 milligrams (mg) per day. Know the amount of meloxicam in the specific product you are taking. If you use meloxicam long-term, your blood will need to be tested often. Visit your doctor regularly.
Storage:
Store at room temperature. Protect from heat, light and moisture. Keep away from reach of children.
