Truro, Cornwall, UK, July 02, 2014 /PressReleasePing/ - As a sparsely populated rural area Cornwall boasts a laid back attitude and way of life, but few people consider the fact that the most south-westerly part of Britain is also an ideal spot to see the sky at night.

Here at The Valley Resort holiday cottages in Carnon Downs we often have visits from people who have visited us because Cornwall's non-light polluted skies afford special opportunities to see rare solar, lunar and extra-terrestrial events.

Ever since The Sky At Night with Sir Patrick Moore people first aired people have been travelling to stay at our 5 star cottages in Cornwall to watch the skies.

We saw most activity in 1999 when thousands of people travelled to the South West to watch a total solar eclipse which was best viewed from the Duchy.

This month we're expecting some keen astronomers to be heading to us for the Southern Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower.

This annually occurring meteor shower can produce up to two dozen meteors in an hour during peak time, which is usually on July 28 and 29.

The meteors can be seen from July 18, though, so there are plenty of chances to see them on a clear night.

The celestial event comes not long after some local students have got more up close and personal with space.

Several Truro College students sent a camera into space this week using a helium balloon and snapped some amazing pictures, although they were almost never seen.

The students sent a Raspberry Pi computer to a height of 15 miles to capture the shots, but then lost track of it when it descended towards earth.

Fortunately it was eventually found by the owners of a Welsh caravan park, who returned the equipment, and incredible pictures, to Truro.
