Infrared sauna therapy has become very popular in recent years. An infrared sauna can easily be installed in most homes and larger apartments. In most cases they do not need a carpenter, plumber or electrician to install. In most cases the home owner can assemble and use an infrared sauna the same day it is delivered to their door. One of the primary reasons for the popularity of the infrared sauna comes from the many benefits that sauna manufactures claim they produce.

Infrared saunas produce heat energy through the use of infrared emitters that heat the Infrared sauna and more importantly the sauna user. Infrared electromagnetic energy is similar to that we receive each day from the sun. When you step outside from an air conditioned room on a sunny day the heat energy you feel is from infrared electromagnetic waves. Unlike the sun's rays infrared heaters do not produce damaging ultraviolet or microwaves. When infrared energy strikes and passes into a human body it creates the heat we feel during infrared sauna therapy. This heat will relieve the pain of sore muscles and the chronic pain of arthritis.

Over the history of the traditional sauna it was well recognized that taking a sauna produced health and well being benefits. Infrared sauna therapy will provide most of the benefits of a traditional Finnish sauna. Many sauna manufactures are making extraordinary claims that there are far more benefits from using infrared energy than from a traditional sauna. Almost all these claims are not supported by sound research. Some proponents will tell you that near infrared energy is safer and more effective than far electromagnetic energy however there is little or no research to prove or disprove these claims. It appears that most all the infrared sauna claims are based on supposition and theory. Obviously more research needs to be done.

However there is no doubt about the general benefit of infrared sauna therapy. Just as with a traditional Outdoor sauna the process removes grit, grime and toxins from the body's largest organ the skin. It also relieves the muscle and joint pain for many people. Research does show that infrared sauna therapy does increase circulation and reduces stress. These saunas operate at lower temperatures allowing people with emphysema or other lung function diseases to enjoy the benefits of a sauna. It also allows people to tolerate the saunas heat for a longer period of time. Many people report that the infrared sauna heat appears to penetrate deeper into the muscle than a traditional sauna.

Infrared light lies between the visible and microwave portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Infrared light has a range of wavelengths, just like visible light has wavelengths that range from red light to violet. Near infrared light is closest in wavelength to visible light, and far infrared light is closer to the microwave region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Far infrared waves are thermal, meaning they are felt as heat.
