The Bay Area rally on Chinese New Year 2015 is well-timed because Guangdong (Canton) was just named sister state to California in September of 2014. The problem is that according to HSI e-news on 2/20/13, Guangdong is one of two provinces in southern China where dog meat consumption is the most rampant.

Sunnyvale, CA, February 16, 2015 /PressReleasePing/ - The Bay Area rally on Chinese New Year 2015 is well-timed because Guangdong (Canton) was just named sister state to California in September of 2014. The problem is that according to HSI e-news on 2/20/13, Guangdong is one of two provinces in southern China where dog meat consumption is the most rampant. On Thursday, February 19 a local grassroots organization will stage a peaceful gathering to raise awareness about the country’s brutal dog and cat meat trade. The rally, planned to coincide with China’s most important holiday will be held in San Francisco’s Union Square from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Andrea Gung, Founder of The Duo Duo Animal Welfare Project, the group organizing the rally, says, “We’re focusing on the Guangdong (Canton) province because according to e-news from HSI on 2/20/2013, Guangdong is one of two provinces in southern China where dog meat consumption is the most rampant." The Bay Area rally is well-timed because Guangdong was just named sister state to California in September of 2014. There are currently ads on San Francisco buses inviting people to visit Guangdong. “Can you imagine how traumatized American tourists will be when they happen upon a dog and cat market full of frightened, howling and dead animals?” Gung asks. (CNN connect the world 3/9/2010 http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/03/09/china.animals/)

Duo Duo Animal Welfare Project has been mobilizing Californians to call, write and petition Governor Jerry Brown to urge Guangdong Governor Zhu Xiaodan to enforce laws against the trade.

Gung, who is getting some backlash from fellow Chinese Americans, is quick to point out that most Chinese people do not eat dog or cat. She says, “They love their pets just as much as Americans do. Dog eating is just a sub-culture in China.”

The lunchtime rally, which will feature several speakers, including Dr. Peter Li, China expert with Humane Society International, is free and open to everyone.

As she talks about the joy and happiness of this important holiday, Gung says the theme of the rally is “new year, new hope for China’s dogs and cats.”
