I loved the way I was feeling. I loved that it became easy for me to lose weight and not suffer from cravings for the harmful foods I left behind. All was great.

Faced with adopting sweeping lifestyle changes after a serious health diagnosis, I knew that the common factor in my impending new lifestyle had to be a constant: no more processed foods!

The question was how do I put these new rules into play without being tempted to resume my old harmful ways of eating? I buried myself in recipes and cookbooks. From what I could tell, eating mostly raw foods seemed to be the way to go in order to regain my health and lose weight. I started to experiment and found that no matter what recipes I prepared, I did not gain weight. In fact, I lost weight. What's more, by cutting out dairy and processed foods, I found that some old nagging health issues disappeared. No longer did I suffer from the constant nasal congestion I had been plagued with since childhood. Many of the migraines I was struggling with on a regular basis disappeared. I felt really good. My mind felt clearer and more crisp than ever before. The lurking brain fog was gone.

I loved the way I was feeling. I loved that it became easy for me to lose weight and not suffer from cravings for the harmful foods I left behind. All was great. Except for one thing, the preparation! In order to maintain a raw food lifestyle, for me, I needed some variety. I did not believe that living day in and day out with basic earth foods such as sprouts, vegetables, nuts and fruits would be doable long term.

In order to cook the wonderful gourmet style raw meals that looked so wonderful in my cookbooks, I found myself consumed with the process. Some of these recipes took hours to prepare. Some even took days! Many recipes required soaking and dehydrating which made planning dinner on any given day impossible. I had to work a week ahead of time. It was just not realistic. Although I was able to find a couple of really incredible raw food restaurants in New York City where I can go get a delicious, gourmet meal whenever I wanted one, at home it was just not a practice I could adopt for my family's daily meals.

There had to be a way to incorporate the healthy food choices of no processed foods, no refined white sugar, no refined white carbohydrates that a raw food diet encompasses, into my life.Next I tried a vegan diet. While I found it much easier to fit aspects of the vegan diet into my lifestyle, I felt it was important to still keep the clean eating portion of the raw foods lifestyle into practice. So with combining these two lifestyles, I came up with one that best suits the needs of my family. It is a combination of the raw and the vegan lifestyles.

From the raw, is the clean eating portion that excludes all processed foods, demands cooking from scratch and incorporates large amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables into my daily routine. The vegan part is the meatless, dairy-less, cooked meal aspect of my new regime. Legumes and whole grains are regularly consumed where they are not really a part of the raw food plan.
