Funding Campaign Achieves 154% of Goal, Allowing Biologists to Double the Pace of Research on Restoring Lost Mitochondrial Function and Preventing Age-related Damage
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif, November 04, 2015 The SENS Research Foundation (SRF), a non-profit organization focused on transforming the way the world researches and treats age-related disease, is pleased to announce that its recent MitoSENS Mitochondrial Repair Project fundraising campaign raised $46,128, achieving 154 percent of its goal. The funds, generated through the longevity research focused crowdfunding platform Lifespan.io, will accelerate the project's research efforts toward restoring lost mitochondrial function and preventing age-related damage.
SRF is in the early stages of creating an innovative system to repair mitochondrial mutations that occur in the body over time. Organisms which age more slowly consistently display lower rates of mitochondrial free radical damage. Reversing and/or preventing damage to mitochondrial DNA may therefore be a key factor in slowing the aging process.
"Successfully completing this project will mean that we have developed a groundbreaking method that will provide us with the capability to safeguard the mitochondrial genome," said Matthew O'Connor, lead researcher for the project. "Our talented team of highly trained mitochondrial biologists has preliminary progress, but we have critical work yet to be done. Increasing our funding with this campaign will allow us to double the pace of our research and bring results to the public that much faster."
